So you guys are saying the U.S. airlines are allowing ammo boxes to be placed in checked luggage? Where else would it go?

I've never locked my ammo box when it was already inside my locked, checked bag. Only when it was flying separate due to South Africa.
If TSA wants into your bag they WILL get into it. If you are there or not, regardless of the lock.

I used a lockable pistol case with a TSA lock as required by Delta.

I use a plastic ammo box that I got from Cabela's. I locked mine (private lock) on the flight to Joberg from JFK and TSA cut the lock to check the ammo. The ammo was in my checked baggage.

Ammo case is supposed to have TSA locks on it so they don't have to cut it off in case they want to look inside. That's the rules.
It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

Well, what I was told/made to do, when flying with ammo internationally, is to put ammo in a locked, secured (with TSA locks) hard ammo case. When flying with ammo in the USA you can put it in your locked, hard side gun case (non TSA locks).
It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

TSA is not International. Most of their Employee's are not in Compliance, TSA Verbiage is in Black and White see my Link above. There is a lot of incorrect information out there,

Good info thanks guys. I looked at that MTM case @ Sportsmans Warehouse yesterday. I'm going with the Pelican instead. Good choice. My Pelican rode in my luggage to East London and back to Johannesburg. For some reason they made me remove it and send it home separate. Thankfully I was not billed for an extra bag. It was at this point I was glad I had purchased a Pelican rather than a lighter MTM. Not sure the MTM would have survived. The hinges and latches are just not as robust as the Pelican.

So you guys are saying the U.S. airlines are allowing ammo boxes to be placed in checked luggage? Where else would it go? Okay, I misspoke. I meant inside your regular suitcase. Last time I went to RSA, the rule was the ammo box had to be separate from other checked baggage, but obviously checked. Now, I'm asking if this is no longer true, if carriers inside the U.S. will allow you to put the ammo box inside your suitcase.

On all of my trips, the first in 2002 to SA and the most recent to Zimbabwe last year, I had my ammo in an unlocked plastic "reloaders" box in with my one checked bag that included my clothing.

I use a Pelican 1200 orange case. Would get yellow if available. Has been on at least 15 flights. I lock it with a Master brass padlock. A key for the padlock is attached to that lock with an 18” length of paracord. I put it in checked luggage. No issues on way into JNB. I have my details on piece of heavy paper taped to outer surface of case. For return I leave all ammo behind. Sometimes I carry empty case onboard as a personal item. No problems, ever.

Kind of obvious that there are NO hard and fast rules. Make your choice and take your chances.

I bought a lightweight cheap "ammo case" from Harbor Freight for like $8. I am worried about the weight. I don't intend to bring it or any ammo home.

I am not understanding most of the answers. It is my understanding TSA in US requires ammo in original factory boxes inside a hard sided case. I have used tupperware, cigar boxes etc. Does South Africa require that the hardsided case also be lockable and locked?
