Howdy All,

Longtime lurker of the forum, figured it was about time I registered. Anyway I recently inherited a 61 vintage 99 in 308, my first Savage lever rifle and I have a couple of questions I am hoping the Savage veterans will be able to help me with.

First off did Savage ever offer left handed laminated monte carlo stocks from the factory? That is what mine is wearing, problem is I am a righty. I am guessing no but, the metal to wood fitting on this rifle is pristine so maybe it is factory back when factory work was done right.

I need to shoot it as is to see if I can comfortably shoot it but if not my next question is where is the best place to find a replacement stock? I have done a few searches, just wondering if one place is better than the other.

If I can figure out how to post pics I will.

Thanks,
Tom

Welcome to the campfire!

I presume by left handed you mean it has a cheek piece? Not factory, we've seen one or two with them. Okay.. Never Say Never, but almost surely not.

There is an image gallery towards the bottom of the list of forums, you can start a thread there and upload full sized pictures. Then just give us a link (or tell us you loaded them) and we can help display them.

Factory also never offered laminated 99 stocks, so you have aftermarket stocks for sure. You could probably find some left-handed 99 lover who would give you a fair price for them to offset getting replacement stocks.

And Welcome to the 'Fire!

1961 sounds a little early in the history of laminated stocks so I doubt that it is factory (custom/R&D). 99's tend to crack at the rear of the tang and a laminated stock would stop that problem.

Value of the rifle depends on condition, model and your attachment to it. Your stock might or might not match up to another similar action. The best move might be to sell/trade for an equal right handed rifle. New replacement stocks are not great and probably need some fitting. A custom stock will be more expense with fitting and finishing.

...welcome to the fire!

Thanks for the welcome guys. Yes the stock has a cheek piece on the right hand side of the stock. Tried 3 times to upload pics, no joy will try again later. Not looking to sell the rifle, but I would like to be able to use it, thus the search for a stock. I am going to try and get to the range this weekend and give it a shot.
Thanks again hope I can get this pic thing figured out smile

The thing that tripped me up in getting a photo into the gallery is that you must have an entry in the TITLE and DESCRIPTION fields. I still can't figure out how to get a pic to show up in a post though. If you figure it out tell me.

Yes, posting pictures is tedious In the IMAGE GALLERY you need to fill in the TITLE AND DESCRIPTION, and after adding a picture file you'll need to select DONE.

After you have them posted in the image gallery, you can copy and paste the web address as a link, or you can COPY IMAGE LOCATION and post in any different thread with,

Ok finally got the pics to post in the Image Gallery https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/galleries/12809848/savage-stock Will someone more web savvy than I post them in the thread? I thought about the sanding idea but only for a fleeting second smile

Aftermarket stock, and reblued metal. Definitely an interesting look, I'd seen the laminated stocks advertised and had always wondered what they would look like.

Yea it is certainly one of a kind, just like the friend who willed it to me, thanks again Dick it will be put to good use.

Took it to the range this AM and it shot like a dream, no problem at all with a righty shooting the left handed stock so I am going to keep it as is. Only thing I am going to change is to update the Redfield 6x to a modern variable. Thinking 2x7 or 3x9, thoughts?

What kind of optics to you all use on your 99s?

Thanks,
Tom

My normal preference is a Leupold 3-9x, VX-1 or VX-2. For 30-30/303 Savage I go 2-7x, but that would be fine on a 308 as well.

I think a 2 x 7 provides a good range of optics and, to a lesser degree, they just look right on a 99. To me, larger scopes look more like you screwed the gun to the scope than the other way around - though I certainly understand why someone would want or need to go there.
