Hey All....has anyone tried Power Pistol in their 41 magnum...? Have used Unique for many, many years but it really is a FILTHY powder...yeah,,I know they tried to make it burn cleaner....does not seem like they did...it is still filthy...9 gr Unique with H&G Keith SWC is very accurate but after a dozen or so shots one has a FILTHY mess on one's revolver... Anyway...have been using Power Pistol in my Glock Model 40 10mm...10gr with Speer 165gr Gold Dot is a proven hunting load and burns VERY clean......Looking at the burn rate charts Power Pistol is right there with Unique & Universal...seems it would be a natural for the 41 Magnum...am looking for a lighter than full power load...would like to push that H&G bullet about 1100 to 1200 fps max...that should make a fine hunting load out to at least 75yds....HA...most of my shots will be under 50yds with my 68yr old eyes... What say ye ALL....??? YES...NO..?? Thanks.. Pete

I hope I dont get jumped on by others but here is what I have found using Unique and PowerPistol in the 44 Mag with medium velocity loads. It takes roughly 10 or 11 percent more PowerPistol to equal the same velocity with Unique. This is with the 250 Keith bullet and standard primers. Now, you do what you want. It is you and not me. But I would go over my Unique load by 7 percent and go up till I matched the Unique load. A few FPS either way wont make any difference as long as it is close. Again do as you wish. Just telling what I know based on using PowerPistol in the 44 Mag which isnt a 41 Mag.

Brian Pearce has used Power Pistol in all manner of handguns over the last few years, you might write to him care of Wolfe Publishing. Looks like he has an article on P.P. In .357 & .44 in this month's issue.
Or you could try contacting Alliant Powder directly.

Power Pistol is a lot cleaner than Unique, but all I use in mid magnum 41 cast loads is CFE Pistol. Either the 412429 (224gr) or NOE 237 Keith; its about as clean as it gets with cast bullets.
Hodgdon has data, I use 8 grs. and it takes .5-1 grain more than Unique and Universal for like velocity.
Fwiw, Brian Pearce lists 7.5 grs. Unique for 1,025-1,055 in two guns with the Lyman 410429 220gr..in Handloader 221. No loads with Power Pistol.

i have used hp38, 231, titegroup, universal, unique, some of the accurate powders and probably others in 41magnum. also 2400. I have always liked accurate because it meters so well. Having said that, as my enabler on here once told me, about 7 1/2 to 8 grains of unique covers most situations. I tend to agree. I have never noticed mess. I have used power pistol in hot rod 45acp loads running 200grainers up to 1000fps. My idea of a decent all around 41mag load is around 220 grains at around 1000fps. But i could say the same about 44magnum, and 45colt to for that matter.

Another fwiw, what one finds loads for in 44special with 250s does pretty similar in the 41 with 220-230 gr. casters...

HEY ALL...Thanks to all who read and contributed....I went to my back issues of HANDLOADER(#264) and found that Brian Pearce did a piece on the 41 magnum....had the following info for Power Pistol with a Keith Style bullet 231gr: 7.0gr - 974fps 7.5gr - 1015fps 8.0gr - 1065fps
Will test this today.... Thanks Again to all... Pete

I am trying to remember what length barrel Brian was using when he did that article... As I recall he had a 6.5" Blackhawk and a 4" 657 Mountain Gun...
If that is the case and he was shooting the 6.5" BH then Unique and PP are running about the same per grain... 8.0 grains of Unique with a 210-220 grain bullet will run 1050-1100 from a 6.5" barrel... They are 930-970 from a 4"...

I am a big fan of Titegroup in my larger bore handguns. You might give it a try.
