I talked to John after auction close. He was very surprised I was the only bidder. A lot of people follow his auctions closely, so I don't know what the explanation is. I am particularly excited about it as I have another one that is a dead match to this one - including the wood. It is in a strong 99% condition. I sold it several years ago (on internet auction) and regretted it. About two years later, I contacted the buyer and sure enough he still had it. I pleaded for him to sell it back to me and he did - only adding his actual cost for a mint Lyman windage adjustable tang sight (he added $150 I think) that he had added to the rifle. I must have sounded pretty darn pitiful when I called wink

Les - I know two reasons there were no bids on it - there is no ring on the left side of the receiver and it is not a .38/55!

If you find a 99 H with a ring on the side, I want it. And yeah you are probably right, 30-30 is just so plain. grin Les

The fruit wood stock and no side panels is what killed the sale most people don't beleive it is original . I got one in 303 for 165.00 shipped. not in as good as shape as yours stock is really rough.. good buy dude.

Here I go again. Prolly gonna bore some of you. But bear with me. eBay has a statement they make to entice individuals to sell on eBay. That statement is "where can you advertise and have potentially 10,000,000 customers looking at your item?" So my point is, if something is on the internet already and anyone thinks posting it here is going to give someone an advantage OR disadvantage is only fooling themselves. I saw the particular rifle you bought and I'm happy for you. The gun just doesn't appeal to me. I don't like fruitwood stocks OR birch, OR maple for that matter. I just got off GunsAmerica, and Auction Arms. Quite frankly I get pretty bored looking at PICTURES of guns. I personally don't mind an auction post. To me it looks like the prices are going to soar whether or not the auction is posted here or not. If anyone thinks they're alone on an auction,,THINK again. you got probably 10,000,000 others with you. Maybe not that many, but at least way more than you think..

Hubert - I know some guys don't like fruitwood stocks, but to me Savage could commit no sin in any rifle they made that is older than me. Show me ANY vintage M99 that is all original and has nice condition and I am IN LOVE. They just didn't make any bad ones back then. Vintage fruit wood doesn't turn me off a bit. Given this is the only model that didn't have side panels on it, I think you may be correct - many buyers who aren't real knowledgeable might assume they have been sanded off. I notice in Johns' ads, he often wrote very little about the gun as far as a detailed description - e.g. usually didn't give an estimate of percentage of original finish etc. I think providing a minimum of detailed info. on a gun doesn't help. I know I like to see a very detailed description.

Why people didn't take an interest in this one sure was one on me. What the heck - let me post the link and you guys can pick it apart:

Huge difference to me between vintage fruitwood and modern birch. I will say the sometimes the vintage Winnies with gum wood stocks occasionally have some interesting grain patterns.

If it had been posted I might have run the bid up on you...I like the 99-H in all configurations. I think that one still had its original 22B front sight.

I bought one, fruitwood, from WesJ that he had at the Savage Fest. I had an ealy one with the very blond stock but it was to ruff to keep.

That's sure a short production run. By that measure, they are a rarity and I think these are sleepers - that other collectors will wake up to soon.
