The taxidermist has offered to make a replica with the measurements and photos along with the original cape.

You would be amazed at what something like this will bring,a local taxidermist here sold to of his heads to a cuban and got enought to go to Africa on a hunt. They use them to make a trophy room and don't get there hands dirty,I would get the game&fish department on this,it sounds a little like one of these deals, plus you have no way of knowing if the cape is yours, unless you have meat in the freezer, then you have DNA,start there, sounds to me like you may own a taxidermy shop pretty soon.....good luck

I went with a friend to pick up his B&C whitetail mount last fall and I asked the taxidermist how much the racks are insured for in case of fire or theft. He said that in the eyes of the insurance company they don't have any value unless they are appraised. Without an appraisal the loss would be equal to the cost of the hunting license or tag.

With all the attention on whitetail racks and scores nowdays I suppose any taxidermist is concerned about break-ins, so it's no wonder they don't mind if you keep the rack until they are ready to put it on the form.

Come to think of it, I think I'll go pick mine up and keep it until he calls.

I hope you're kidding...and like said earlier, you've watched way too much CSI....its not a world record head, and DNA tests cost A LOT of money. It was a theft, plain and simple. Not some sort of black market cuban-involved whitetail selling ring for 150" whitetails.....lol.
