Is this simular cartridge to a 38-55? Just longer? If so I have lots of load date if interested. Let me know.

38-56 is a necked down 45-70 case, much different than the 38-55 cartridge.

I had one, used cast and 2400 but my old rifle really needed a fat bullet. I sized to .379 as that was the fattest die I had on hand.
Didn't do too bad but I got distracted with other projects.

My loads for 38-56 are with 255 grain cast bullets. Cast diameter .381, sized to .377 and gas checked. My best load is 35.0 grains of 3031.

Accurate 5744 was highly reccommended by 'experts' but I found it totally disappointing. Loaded 20.0 grains.

Lee data that came with my dies lists 3031 @ 28.9 grains, and 4895 @ 30.2 grains.

I have a Marlin 1895 in 38-56 of 1897 vintage .

I cast RCBS 250 grain GC bullets and Lyman 264 grain GC bullets as well.

I've shot both in my 38-56 with excellent results .

With the heavier Lyman bullet I loaded 20 grains of XMP5744 with a CCI200 primer .
With the 250 RCBS bullet I load 21 grains of XMP5744 and the CCI200 primer .

Killed a large WT doe this past season with the Lyman bullet at about 30 yards .
