I've lived a bunch of places and everyplace I've ever lived in the south, there are always stories about black panthers. I must have met at least a dozen people in at least 1/2 dozen states that have seen one.

In Brazil, they'd yawn. They're not as rare as Jack makes out.

Jaguars and leopards can be black phase, but mountain lions cannot.

Mountain lions are the only large cat in the USA, so unless a rare jaguar from Mexico came up here, and it happened to be the even more rare black phase, they just don't exist here in the states.

There are still a few Black Panthers around these parts, those that managed to not get eaten by Bigfoot.

I posted this as there were some who stated the animal outright did not exist.

Literally, a "panther" is a mountain lion. Or another word for it anyway.

A jaguar or leopard isn't a "panther" by any stretch.

So... a black panther does not exist. They were right. wink

as stated, that cat shown is a not so rare black phase jaguar. It is a far cry from a black panther, mountain lion, cougar, or any other name one might call the large cat once found through out North America.

I'm thinking mountain lions are more widespread in the US than many people know.

They are a far ranging animal by nature.

Lots of states have them now where they didn't a few years back.

I sure don't mind a few cats scattered around. The operative word being "few"... wink

I had a mt lion run pass me at my old lease near Cisco TX. Thing looked pretty black to me. Never knew I was there as it was on a mission towards a dog or 'yote. Heard a yelp just seconds later and a bit of rustling but that was it.

Probably a third to half of the mountain lion sightings here in Pennsylvania, people say, are black ones.

I saw one when I was a kid, except it wasn't a Panther. It was a rare but not unknown creature that at the time could be found in Texas. It was sneaking along a fence line downwind of some cattle and I was about forty yards downwind from it,and had a long enough time to watch it, I clearly remember the long tail extended and twitching.
While it wasn't a Panther (not large enough) It sure looked enough like to to scare the hell out of a ten year old kid.
As soon as it was out of sight I set some sort of record to get home.

my grandparent while growing up in north georgia right on the north carolina line spoke of pant'rs in the winter time threatening, even attacking rural homesteads at the edge of the wilderness.

the folks would burn mattresses and pillows in the fireplace to keep the pant'rs out of the cabin.

it'd be mid to late march and the pant'rs were hungry and they had come to eat.

the smoke would keep them from coming down the chimney to where the wife & children were.

either the cur dog was either already inside for safety and last minute defense, or was dead outside defending the premise.

mtn pant'rs were not something to be messed with during the hard season.
