Im baffled by the info available on line. Our guns range from 150-170 decibles and “immediate” hearing loss occurs at or over 120– is what im told. The same sources tell you to wear hearing protection as a solution- the best of which shuts out 30db. Even the valved muffs that shut out loud sounds are only rated 25-30. Its important to me as my hearing keeps getting worse. I stopped shooting trap and now wear plugs and muffs at the range, but the numbers dont add up.
If we are all shooting weapons louder than 150 db and only getting 30 db protection, how come we are nit all deaf?

Don't know. Those 90mm tank rounds did me in. At the trap range I use foam ear plugs and muffs. After shooting, my hearing aids go back in

Remember, the decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. 180 is 10x as loud as 170.
Imagine a corporate oligarchy so effective, so advanced and fine tuned that its citizens still call it a democracy.

Enjoying my tinitus as we speak. Wind noise in my pickup, too much drug music in college, and not putting on ear muffs when I hunted all were contributing factors. Damn that Led Zeppelin.... Damn 'em.

Hearing damage is a bit like pain - some people have a higher threshold than others. But don't assume you are one of those.
Damage is also a function of both intensity and duration. The analogy is a flame -- you can wave your hand through even the hottest flame with little or no damage. But slow down or pause and you get burned. Gunshots have very high intensity, but very short duration.
Frequency is also an issue. With both intensity and duration at a single frequency or narrow band, your hearing at that frequency will be deeply damaged at that frequency. Gunshots range from deep booms to sharp high cracks but most are broad spectrum covering lots of frequencies. Exposure to any small segment of that spectrum is therefore lessened.
It's complicated. Wear the best protection you can afford. Avoid the worst noises. And get tested often. Damage is cumulative, so your hearing constantly degrades.
Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

Just got hearing aids last week (needed them for a long time). I attribute my hearing loss to not wearing hearing protection while shooting when I was younger (I double up now), working in a machine shop, rock concerts, and years of running with loud music blaring through headphones.
