I've been noticing this seems to be happening more often lately. When my wife and I approach a restaurant hostess some of them just want eye contact with my wife, and address their greeting and questions just to her. They are usually a minority, and I've been trying to figure it out. In some minority families, the mom seems to have most of the authority and sometimes the only job so it could be a cultural thing.
Or the social trends especially among the left seems to be united minorities against white males. So it could be racial discrimination against white males? It happened again the other night and then I sat at a table and watched the hostess in action, she was consistently ignoring the men trying not to have interaction with white males.

What does the campfire think, cultural habit, or racial hatred for white males? Maybe something as simple as a generation gap in customary interaction?

Lesbo? Abused? Liberal? Or as you said.

Really no reason not to address one or the other predominantly. Better would be making eye contact with both and let whoever wants to, answer.

You may wish to try going in by yourself. That might give you a better answer (or bring up another question)?

You could politely ask the manager.... His/her/it's response would likely help you to decide if you wanted to support that business.

There is something to that actually.

Usually there is a dominant person, or maybe more accurately, a more engaging person in a couple.

If a hostess is trying to talk to your wife and your wife is purposely not making eye contact or responding in any way....the hostess is dumb.

If I approach someone briskly, I can tell immediately who is going to interact with me and who is not.

That really pisses off a friend of my wife's! He doesn't know crap about mechanics, and she does - and does most of her own car repairs - but who is ignored when they go into the car-parts store??? smile. They initially start by talking to her husband, who stands there with glazed eyes, and mouth open, motioning to his wife...... He works it..... smile

What it is they quit being regular people and are falling back on some type of programming, who knows what it is, but it's not sincerity.

Not all Western Women. My lovely Bride of 31 years is as handy with a firearm as she is with a spatula or an electron microscope.

The slobber running off your chin,
while you lick your eyebrows?

Just sayin

The intimidating thing could be a factor.
I have been told I look mean and pissed off.
Intimidating even.

It's hilarious to me, but, watching people, watching me,
it might be true.

My best guess is it could simply boil down to tips. When a couple/s (male & female) are dining out the female is often more prone to be critical of service and generally have a major influence regarding how well to tip. Also, females can be especially sensitive to other females (in this case wait staff) and suspect attention focused equally or more toward the male as attempting to "flirt" with their spouse/diner date, again affecting tips.

I lost a job to another builder a year ago. A mutual friend told me the wife said It was because my competition talked to her solely during the conversation and I addressed questions to both her and the husband during the conversation. She told me several times this was HER house and SHE would be making the decisions. I figure he was an attorney and would be paying the bills so he deserved to not be ignored but apparently the prick has no balls.
