Ever try to light a wet bic lighter? That’s what the road flare (flair for some members) is for.

I highly prefer a Zippo over a Bic for several reasons. You can light a Zippo with heavy gloves or even by rolling the wheel across your pants. You can set a Zippo down and it will keep burning while you use both gloved hands to hold some tinder in the flame. Not having to hold your thumb on the lever to keep it going is a major plus.

Watched a kid build a fire in the worst conditions imaginable and he had it roaring in no time.
Blowing rain, snow, sleet, crap hard and he just filled a soup can with gas and packed a wet piece of moss on top and lit it. The moss made a dandy wick. Wet wood was stacked all around and lots of wet kindling placed around the fire and arching over. It dried and ignited in short order and a beautiful fire materialized.
Making fire with a bow is not difficult, though it make take a few minutes.

So do I for the reasons you listed, RC. A lot of people say "A Zippo's no good 'cause the fluid dries out." If you fill it and use a piece of bicycle inner tube to seal the base where the top closes on the base, a Zippo will last a long time on just one filling. L.W.

Scripto Vu Lighter, works like a zippo, and won't dry out. Only adds fuel to the cotton and wick when the button on the side is pushed. Doubt they are still made, but readily available on Ebay.

We used large flat rubber bands. Doubt casual observers ever knew why.

Ever try to light a wet bic lighter? Or ever flick your bic, and the dang wind screen and friction wheel just falls off (WTF moment) they are rather cheaply made.

Bics are cheaply made because they're intended to be disposable. A Zippo has a lifetime warranty and can be rebuilt.

You can still get a plain Jane chrome Zippo for under $10 if you look a little. Shipping might cost more than the lighter, though. Here's one on Amazon for under $10 if you have Prime. ZIPPOWith the Lifetime warranty, you only have to buy it once unless you lose it or your kid swipes it.

I recently discovered Clipper lighters. They run off butane, are refillable, and you can replace the flints. I just bought 10 of the translucent minis and 12 of the full size translucent (you can see the fuel level in the translucents. I really like them over a Bic. For you Zippo folks, they also make a "gasoline" model that uses Zippo fluid. Ii really like that lighter as well.
I don't smoke but do EDC several methods to start a fire. Ferro rod on keychain, 3 UCO matches stuck in wallet and a lighter in my pocket. One is none........

I happen to like this mag/ferro rod combo made by a friend of mine for me. It will light hot and true wet or dry, and has never failed to get the job done. the handle is Koa, the ferro rod and magnesium rods are 1/2"x6". It will last a lifetime. https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/galleries/12899979#Post12899979
