I am making my first attempt at installing a remage barrel on a remington action. I have done a couple of savages in the past with no issues. I purchased a McGowan barrel and the threads fit the action perfectly. The action I have did not have a recoil lug so I had to purchase one. The recoil lug will not slide over the threads. I have tried 2 different aftermarket recoil lugs withe the same results. The recoil lug opening is 1.055 when it looks like it should be at least 1.065 or even 1.067. Is this common?

I have run into that quite often even when rebarreling a 700 with a standard barrel and the factory lug. If you make the barrel fit the action threads, the lug will not fit. The proper way to fix it is to chuck the lug in a 4 jaw and bore it but a "field expedient" way is to open the lug hole with an emery cloth flap wheel or emery cloth wrapped dowel. When it fits, clean both sides of the lug with a stone or fine emery cloth on a flat surface.
