The wife asked what Dad day gift our dog could get me? I've come to appreciate 36" axes with 3 1/2 pound heads for most stuff. Short axes are like mini chainsaws to me.

Depends on what you're doing.....for serious splitting I use my splitting maul or a sledge and wedges but about the only thing I split these days is kindling for the wood stove and that old Plumb with a 2# head and 28" haft is just right. The hatchets are for camping.
Don......I like that smaller knife at the bottom of your pic a lot.....

For me, maybe not quite as big as you're describing, but certainly bigger than the average hatchet. Beaver10, Your Dog knows axes for sure! I have more than a few and the Hudson Bay pattern has been a long time favorite and more recently I've been using several Small Forest axe's (Gransfors Bruk & Hults Bruk) in my travels. For bigger jobs I rely on the old Collins.

I just find the longers axes safer for chopping down trees, limbing etc. No doubt different axes for different uses.
I'm about to put a boy's head on a 36" haft.

Agree with you... Boy's axe pattern is another must have. Council Tool makes a nice one if you are buying new.

You have a nice ax (I never thought I'd say that to a guy!)   Seriously, I have a slightly different model axe from Gränsfors Bruk too and I really like it. I took a tour of the Gränsfors Bruk company a few years ago, and I met 3 of the dozen or so axesmiths. Each smith stamps their initials on every ax -- and if one of their axe heads ever cracks and is returned (no time limit warranty), that particular smith is subject to a lot of ribbing from the others. :-) I zoomed in on your picture, and your particular ax was made by " EB" who is Eric Blixt.
