About to work up a load for a 300 wsm for my brother in law who wants a copper bullet. I tried but it's what he wants. He has a Zeiss with a z600 reticle in it and wants it to match his load. A 168 ttsx at 3100fps or a 175 lrx at 3000fps should do the trick. I've heard conflicting reports about required impact speed for expansion. One source says the 168 was made for 308 and 3006 and has a lower expansion speed than the 165 which was made for Magnums.

What is the required expansion speed for the 168 and 175 and which of the two would you load in a 300 wsm. It's a m70 and so has a bit more room in the mag than other models. I'd also like to use either IMR 4451 or imr 7977 if possible.

Thanks

I’d contact Barnes.
I’m thinking 1800 FPS.

Have not had any issues with TTSX bullets expanding, even 168's from a .30-06 in antelope. Hammered a nice buck last year with a .300WM, 175LRX, 2988fps M.V. at about 300 yards. Instant down, two holes, lots of destruction between them.

I'd go with whichever shoots best. Or a 180g.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I've loaded the 168 TSX for a friends 300WSM and he has used it on Dall Sheep, Mountain Goat, Red Stags, Fallow, deer...its been a good one for him. I would do the same if I ever got a 300WSM for my own use. Now, in a bigger case (the 300WM, I like 76gr R22/180 Barnes) In the 300 RUM I like the 200gr bullets, usually the 200 NAB though. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the responses all. I emailed Barnes and they said:

The 168 gr. TTSX will expand down to 1500 fps and the 175 gr. will expand down to 1600 fps.

I guess I will pick the one that shoots best and call it good.

I shoot the 200g LRX in my Model 70 300WSM and it's like a laser. I load them about 2850-2900 FPS in NORMA Brass and Ramshot HUNTER Powder.

I have shot the 168 ttsx in 5 or 6 300 wsm's and they all shoot lights out. Great bullet!

I too have been shooting the 168TTSX over H4350 in mine, It shoots very very well and did a great job on a Moose as well as a couple of deer.

I would try the 150 ttsx over about 73 g of superformance. Shoots 1/2 moa or better in my rifle and I dropped a moose with it at 547 yards. In the front shoulder out behind the ribs on the other side. 3400 fps muzzle velocity and I see no need for heavier than the 150. I'd even consider the 130 but the 150 has a little bit of bc and flies well.

My Kimber Montana loves the 150 TTSX at 3250 fps and the 168 TTSX at 3100 fps. Neither has ever left me wanting for more out to about 600 yds. I have other rifles that I shoot heavier, higher bc bullets in when I expect ranges to get stretched out.

The problem for him is that the 150 @ 3350fps doesn't match the z600 reticle. A 168 @ 3100 or a 175 @ 3000 does.

The 168 TTSX was the prototype for the LRX line of bullets. They made it then decided to develop a whole new line around it so it got called a TTSX even though it was really the first LRX, that’s why it expands slower than the other TTSX’s.

The 168gr TTSX had great accuracy for me in a couple of M70’s, only shot 1 animal that I can remember - a big axis buck at abt 125-150 yds, complete pass through of both shoulders, dropped him in his tracks. That was with an Extreme Weather.

Curious as to where you got that piece of info? Happy Trails

I use the 168TTSX at 3100 in my Montana 300WSM. Don't reckon I need anything else.

RL17 is my powder. I've used this load from December in Alberta to South Africa in May. I can easily get 3150, but backed off a bit because of warmer temps in Africa, wanted to avoid pressure problems.
