Anyone use or ever used these Speer bullets for elk? I need to work up a load and I don't want to make a bad choice with the bullet. I don't think there is any reason to go with an ultra premium bullet with only 2700fps and all the sectional density the 250 has is there?
Thanks!

I haven't used that bullet on elk, but to say that it wouldn't work great would be like saying that the cor-lokt isn't enough for deer!

IME The Hornady 250 gr. has worked well. I think, it might be one of the most accurate bullets for the .338 . At 2700fps. it will hold up fine. I have used the Hornady out of my 338 Rum.,338 Win. I Have taken Elk with it. I have seen it used on Moose, Elk, Deer, Song-Dog's. Works great.
I have tried to use the Grand Slams. They would not group, for me as the Hornady Bullets. I also like Swift A-Frame, Nosler Partitions.
Hope this helps..

Ruger, I use 200 gr. Grand Slams in my 30.06 and they have performed very well on several elk.
I did notice that the Grand Slam is getting pricey!

I assume you are concerned with the price of the premium bullets heck get seconds from the Nosler proshop.

I assume you are concerned with the price of the premium bullets heck get seconds from the Nosler proshop. Yeh I guess that is what I'm getting at. I want to be able to have a single load but shoot the snot out of it and not have to worry, "crap there goes another $40 box of 50 bullets". I think I am leaning towards the Hornady as the Speers aren't really that much cheaper then NP or TSXs. I think I'll have to work up 2 loads, 200gr Hornady's for range work/deer hunting and a 210-250 NPs or TSXs for a heavy game hunt.
You need to call it. I can't call it for you.

I bought some .338/250 Grand Slams at a gun show. I bought them because they were pretty cheap, but I soon found out that they shot exceptionally well out of my .338-06 (2440 fps). The only animal I got the chance to whack with them was a black bear. Both shots were broadside pass throughs, and neither bullet was recovered. The bear didn't like them at all and gave up arguing in less than 20 feet.
Grand Slams are getting more expensive and harder to find, so I am switching to Nosler 225gr Accubonds. Hopefully, I will have some good stories to share regarding their performance.
Thoroughly enjoying Alaska since 2001.

I used Hornady Interlock 250 grain 35 cal. bullets in my .358 STA @ 2800 fps last season. Took a cow at around 125 yards. Bullet went through both shoulders and the spine. Complete penetration, quarter size exit, and didn't shoot the sh!* out of the meat. Without significant load testing I still got nearly MOA groups. They are priced well enough to practice with, and performance was just what I like to see.

Wonderful elk bullet. I've been fortunate due to living in Lewiston and purchasing the speer 2nds at a very low price for years to get an idea of how they peform. Speer changed the Grand Slam in 1998 to make it more accurate and they eliminated the dual core and thickened the jacket. They still use the hot-core process and it appears to be more accurate and still holds up well. I've used the 338 250 on Bear, elk, mooose ect and have been very impressed. I push the 250 at 2,800 FPS and I've shot game up close and never had a failure.

I shoot the 225grn GS out of my .338-06 at just short of 2700fps. It punch right through the shoulder of my bull, but opens on the ribcage of small PA whitetails. I like them.

I have used the 180 grain GS in 300 WM and 285 grain (I think, may be 270 grain)GS in 375 H&H. Both performed great on elk, only 1 or 2 took more than a few steps. If they shoot good, I recommend them.
