I stumbled into an old war movie on TCM tonight called 49th Parallel. A German U-Boat is sunk in Hudson Bay leaving a 6 man raiding party stranded ashore. The movie goes on to follow their escape and evasion efforts. But in those efforts, they shoot up the local village at the Hudson Bay Company Store. One of the locals uses his Savage 99 to kill one of the Germans.
If you can catch the movie, the scene is about 40 minutes in from the start, after the Germans have commandeered the Company plane and are trying to take off. I didn't get a good look at the rifle, but I'm pretty sure I saw a schnabel forend. Also maybe a bolt with a square end rather than a rounded one? Didn't catch if it was a takedown. The movie was made in 1941 and set in 1940, sometime after the war started but before America got into it.
There's also a couple of scenes with a Winchester (1895?) and a Colt revolver in them. And I really enjoyed seeing the Farmall tractors with binders in operation too. Anyhow, I haven't seen this movie discussed here before, so I thought I would mention it. Very much a wartime propaganda movie but still enjoyable.

pretty sure it's an 1899A or 99A, looks like ramp front sight? So 99A? Straight stock, Uncheckered, schnabel tip. Movie is on YouTube if you want to see the scenes. Good eye! And good shooting by that Inuit.

That rock the local was leaning on provided a pretty good rest. And darn good cover if the Germans would have shot back. I think you're right about the ramp front sight.

A recent Canadian series called "Tin Star had an episode where a First Nations member had a Model 99. I didn't get a good look as it was on a 19" black and white TV but it was definitely a 99.
I couldn't get anything from the State's on that old set but that one Canadian channel came in well. I think I last used that tv in 1983.

I've never seen the movie. Just read about it and I want to see it. Apparently it was meant as a 'propaganda' film to get us to join England in the war.

I saw the movie as a kid but didn't know the name until now. Movies like this were a staple of late night tv when a single channel played beyond midnight. The other channels showed the American flag and played the Star Spangled Banner before signing off.

Death hunt with Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin had Charles B using a 99...
When people face the possibility of freezing or starving there is little chance they are going to listen to unfounded claims of climate doomsday from a bunch of ultra-rich yacht sailing private jet-setting carbon-spewing hypocrite elites

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.
