The world's most popular .22: ~the Marlin Model 60~:

... with numbers over 11,000,000 manufactured since 1960 to the present- is so common (almost taken for granted) but still one of the oldest, most dependable, most accurate, and least expensive .22s- ever.

The Ruger 10-22 is obviously the best semi-auto because it is so easy to replace all the parts with good ones.

The 10 round rotary mag is the best made. Yea lotta people like to replace it with aftermarket mags that jam but not me. I love the Ruger rotary. That's why I put the Ruger ahead of the Marlin.

Also the Winchester model 63 got alotta votes and has me interested in buying todays manifestation of it-the Taurus 63, but isnt that a single action rifle?

I have a Taurus 63, and love it. Grouseman who posts here put me on to it. The magazine holds lots of rounds, don't remember how many, but a sufficient number.. grin It loads through a tube located in the butt stock.
I also love the Ruger 10-22 magazines. When set up properly, they feed flawlessly.

Well I learned alot on this thread. One thing I learned is that there may not be a single best semiauto rifle for each gun has it's own niches where it excells. There are several really nice semiauto rifles out there. The Ruger 10/22 is a great semiauto to some and a clunker to others and it;s easy to see why folks think both good and bad of the 10/22.

I think there are some other 22 semiauto rifles out there that I will be buying one day. It was very interesting to learn from others about some other great rimfies. This thread gave me alot more feedback than I expected.

OK folks this thread has had two well trained fighters show up for the final weigh in. We have the TC and the 10/22. Which is better? Off the shelf the TC would seem to win this match according to the Las Vegas predictions but I think the 10/22 could easily be modified to overwhelm the TC. I set no price limit on the best 22LR. (ok I've really baited them now)Which isthe best semiauto rifle? I say the Ruger is.

Is the Ruger M10/22 the best .22 semi-auto?

If the question had been "Is the M10/22 "design" the best ever semi-auto .22 developed?," I might be inclined to agree.

The companies like Volquartsen that make all-steel versions of the M10/22 make works-of-art with those pieces - in looks and function/accuracy. Wish a run-of-the-mill Ruger M10/22 was as good, but that would be a rare thing. Still, the Ruger's have served me well enough! And they modify and customize very well indeed - as well as I've ever wanted. And I'm more than just a Sunday plinker. wink

Too many gun designs for waaaay too many applications to totally agree with the original post's question.

The magazine design is great on a 10-22, as it allows a flush mounting with ten rounds.

That being said, I've had a lot of magazine problems with my 10-22. The thing blows all the crud back in the mag.

Other than that, it's fine. Quite accurate, but not nearly as accurate as my TC Classic. But, more ammo tolerant.

Mine is suppressed, which means it's dirtier.

Very informative. I had not realzed suppressors forced residue back into the magazine. But that makes sense. BTW Ruger mags can be disassembled and cleaned. The first time though you will have probs reassembling till you get the hang of it. Now you guys have me interested in a TC. Darn yall!

And fairly often even hit what you're aiming at. laugh

If one seeks accuracy in a semi .22 rifle out of the box, go for the Classic. It has already had done to it what you have to do extra to Ruger 10-22s to get them to shoot.

My buddy has a 10-22 that is average accurate with most .22 ammo. Our gunstore once had some Winchester made "Aussie" .22 ammo, which was loaded a bit hotter than regular Winchester "to Austrailian Standards" as the box said. It sure sounded that way; I can shoot Min Mags out of my suppressed rifle and it not make much noise, but shooting the Aussie ammo, it was like not having a suppressor at all. I bought a brick of it mostly out of curiosity.

That was by far the most accurate ammo from his Ruger. It shot about half the size groups at 50 yards as the other stuff (which was varied, can't remember what brands.)

Which leads me to believe that hotter .22 loads may be the ticket for accuracy in a stock 10-22. It did in his, anyway.
