That sucks and I'm not making excuses but some of the goats that hang out near the trails on 14-ers get so habituated to people they're downright obnoxious. I've stood on a summit and had a goat walk right up to me, and been blocked on trails when goats were planted in a particular spot and refused to move. It's possible someone had a run-in with them trying to get down the trail and did something stupid. "Poachers" wouldn't use a pistol, wouldn't leave the animals lying, and wouldn't operate on a popular trail.

Sounds like some misfit wanted to play with his pistol and kill something for the heck of it.
