New to anything long range scopes looking for some opinions here.
I am planning on attending a long range school emphasis on ethical hunting. I contacted the school and they gave me a list of scopes they like for the class here are two i have narrowed it down to.
I am not going to school until fall so i have time to wait for a sale DEMO or.

LEUPOLD Mark 4 M1 4.5-14x50mm (30mm tube) LR/T Matte Mil-Dot . LEU54560 cost 899.00

or

Nightforce SHV 3-10x42mm .250 MOA Forceplex Non-Illuminated C583 cost $873.00

Both close in weight 20 and 22 ounces the obvious advantage the Leupold has is 4.5 - 14 vs 3-10 on the Nightforce

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

For me, that comparison would take about two seconds to resolve. For that application, between those two choices- NF all the way.

+2....for starters (regardless of one's opinion on Leupold these days) no reason to miss-match reticle and turret with the options we have these days....mil-dot reticle/M1 MOA turrets on the 54560.

Skeen there was a good size list but for the price this is what i came up with. As you can tell price is a driving force.

If price is a primary factor, and you are willing to consider other options, then I would go with one of the following two:

SWFA 10x if the rifle is a dedicated long range rig

SWFA 3–9x if the rifle is a general hunting rig (you mentioned that the class is geared towards ethical hunting)

Both are cheaper than the other options you listed, and will work perfectly fine. I just took 2nd place in a large PRS match with competitors coming from all over Western Canada, using a SWFA 10x MQ. It was certainly the least expensive scope on the line of about 55 rifles, but I used it while leaving scopes costing nearly 10x as much at home, just to show newer shooters that you don’t have to spend $3000 on a scope to come out and have fun and be competitive shooting PRS. There are a couple of inexpensive options that work.

Jordan

SWFA is on the list i did not look at them thinking the price was way to cheap to be real contender thank you i will start looking at them. The rifle will be a hunting rig and a learn how to shoot distance rig.

I quess the list was made for a reason as it left off a lot of scopes i thought would have been on there. But SWFA is on the buy list.

Thank you Jordan and congradulations.

For that application my favorite two scopes are the SWFA 3-9x and the Bushnell LRHS 3-12x.

I don't have that particular Leupold, but I do have 2 of the NF 3-10x42 SHV & they have been perfect in all respects for the 3 years I've had then.

I wouldn't even consider anything else in their price range.

If you can live with the weight and turret height, the SWFA SS 3-9x42 is a nice scope. Compared to the NF SHV, I’d give the low light advantage to the SHV though. Both seem to dial very well.
