sandpit,
Actually, the .30-40 was designed in 1892, and the 220-grain load accepted by the U.S. Army as the standard cartridge in 1894.
But yeah, it's been taking big game for quite a while....

I drew a cow tag, and that's a start.

Yesterday I pulled the barrel off a pawn shop Sav 111 7mmRM Today I put a Shilen select match 13" twist 5R 308 #3 taper barrel in the lathe and dialed it in. It is going to be a 300 Win Mag. I cut threads. I started drilling, boring, and reaming the chamber 1/2" at a time. The trigger is here. The stock is here. I still need the recoil lug.

Think I’ve settled on a combination of scope and load for this rifle. NF 3-10x42 SHV, 127 LRX with RL16.

I'd be willing to bet that turns out to be a heck of an accurate rifle. Good luck with it!

Centershot: Good luck with the bow! I just drove north through eastern Idaho and saw two large wildfires east and south of DuBois last week. Smoke is bad here in SW Montana - I hope things clear up by your archery season. I am hoping my new artificial knee is strong enough for me to be able to help out in our high country hike in Elk archery camp this year! I missed last years archery Elk season due to knee pain (for the first time in 40+ years!). There is NO place on earth I would rather be than in the high Rockies during archery Elk season (although the few archery Elk seasons I have spent in "the Breaks" have been awesome as well). Again good luck to you. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

IF I get to go this year (doubtful due to the fire @ my house), I'll only have two rifles to choose from and will take them both - Win Mod. 70 w/ a Pac-nor 6.5x55 SE and a Newton 1st Model in 256 Newton. Only two that didn't suffer damage.

I was just wondering about you... how’s everything???
Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Spoke to Cooper yesterday, hope to have my Model 92 in 280 AI by the end of the month so I can get a couple months of practice with it.

After shooting some 175g Barnes LRX last weekend, I'm thinking my .300WM will be primary again this year. 2-shot scope check @ 300 yards resulted in 1" 'group'. Let the barrel cool and then went to 600, where it smacked a clay pigeon while I was trying to work out the elevation in the scope's BDC reticle.
Barnes TTSX, MRX and TTSX have always provided very good accuracy in my rifles. The LRX seems to be another.
