That's a 99E. Nice find!
All 22HP solid frame rifles had takedown barrels, as far as we've ever seen. That's normal.

Don’t see many Es, and particularly in 22HP. Would the front of the receiver be stamped “E” on one of these?

Not sure if those stampings had started by 280,000 - but yes, the E's would be stamped E.
Remember we don't see a 100% match on the receiver stamp to the rifle style. Very high, but not 100%. Never say never..

Calhoun,
Thank you - that is great news! These are so very rare that, even while looking, I never thought I would find one. I’ll try to take some better and more detailed photos this weekend,
John

It looks like it has a ton of case color left on the lever, so that's always a great start. I've run into several that I could have pursued, but they were all well used, to put it mildly. Some day maybe.. right after I find that 99T in 22HP.

Nice E model John. Don't those every day.

Thanks for the nice comments folks. The case colors are very nice. Rick - that’s a very close serial number! I wonder if Savage produced small groups of the solid frame around the much larger groups of the take down?

That's a beauty, much better than my 99E 22 HP, serial # 2692xx. David

Congrats on finding the needle in the haystack.

Very nice find. I've only seen 1 99E in 22 hp so I brought it home.

That’s a nice rifle, is the 22 hp the only rare one or are the other calibers hard to find as well??

Solid frame 22HP rifles are rare, nice ones even rarer.

Do you guys that own Es shoot them? Also, where is the letter supposed to be on the front of the receiver? How visible and how large is it? I’d like to see photos of the other Es out there. Thanks!

I've shot mine and it keyholes some of the shots even at 25 Yds. That's with factory Norma and S&B ammo. I've attached some photos that I posted a few years ago. The cool "checkering" is only on the right cheekpiece. David

Polecat and Wyo1895, thank you for posting your rifles. Interesting that both are scoped.

Polecat and Wyo1895, thank you for posting your rifles. Interesting that both are scoped. Here's mine that came to me from a friend in Maine. At the time it was paired up with an unfired K that also came home. The E ic currently scoped with a Lyman Alaskan in a Milller Kodiak mount.
