...but 'they' get to burn lead:

http://www.ktuu.com/content/news/Do...y-shot-by-AST-in-St-Marys-490029631.html

Having heard this play out via phone ...... my wife talking to her cousin who saw it outside her window in Saint Mary's. This incident probably won't make the headlines...

Trooper may have been wheelchair-bound. crazy Who knows. I could, perhaps, understand it if they were indoors. However, it happened out in the great wide open for all to see. Fellow's body was dropped right out in the wide-open street......"four and floored". (Would that be called a "Quad Tap"?)

Will they jump on cop cars and sit in the middle of the interstate grin

Maybe someone should tell em they can't drink booze, because they don't have the enzymes. Oh; I guess they could be taught about drug use also.

But bears don't have knives, they just have huge claws and teeth.
That guy could have charged the trooper too.
If a bear charges you, you can run, till he catches you.

If a guy armed with a knife refuses to drop it perhaps they could use bear spray first, then maybe a taser, or bean bags, with the guns only as a last resort. About 12 years ago a guy a couple hundred yards down the road from me got into a confrontation with cops one night in the dead of winter. He was drunk and had an old revolver on him.... didn't drop it on command. When he pointed it at them he died in a hail of gunfire... I've always maintained that with all the other tools the police have at their disposal they resort to gunfire too quickly in some situations.

I feel worse for the Trooper, suicide by cop is a cheap move. When someone threatens you w/ a deadly weapon
feel free to use a less than lethal means to defend yourself.

Seems to me Mr. Tyson made a choice ...albeit not a good one. Pretty hard to expect an officer in a chase of an armed suspect to ask the perp to hold up while he holsters is gun and gets out the taser or goes back to the squad car to get some bean bags. Maybe the trooper should have used a Vulcan Mind Meld on him to settle him down!

Hard to say if it was suicide-by-cop; I don't happen to know the party. What I do know is that there was domestic violence involved, and likely alcohol. Neither of those encourage good judgement or decisions. I agree that the trooper is now in a bad place. Unfortunately it also puts many other troopers in a bad place and at more risk when it comes to dealing with rural problems. And with the trouble AST has in recruiting new hires it's unlikely that this officer will face anything serious even if he is found at fault. And so the cycle continues. Their motto: Loyalty-Integrity-Courage seems heavily weighted toward the first part. They are very much disinclined to allow criticism, either constructive or otherwise. The popular concept of "continuous improvement' does not include much outside input.

It's a rural village......

Not even sure if they have squad cars there, probably do, but it isn't anything like what many people imagine. Population: 600.

How long would you wait if someone pointed a gun at you?

I will advise you computer hero,s to hold remarks until you face the same circumstances, gun or knife, then you will be qualified to comment to comment. GW

letting a hostile within your safety zone is asking for injury or death. each person needs to establish the distance you will allow someone to approach before doing one of 2 things. either flee or fight.
my personal line in the sand is 15 feet. have a friend start from a dead stop and charge you. adjust the distance as needed to allow you to respond. as i get older that 15 feet isn't enough.
there are times when cops do respond with deadly force that seems outrageous but a knife can kill you as easy as a bullet.

this^ if someone intending to knife you is within 30 ft, your options are very limited for survival.
