Careful Steelhead! This could turn into another Campfire signature flesh fest. It's a slippery slope.

Like I said, this is a Freakish buck I killed in 2016. He's NOT an 8 but the MOST freak deer I've ever killed.

I was walking to my truck to go hunting just breaking daylight (legal hours). I was in my backyard and this buck was with another smaller buck and a Doe. I had my M Six 06 (606) & my shooting sticks in my hands. This is the ONLY buck I have seen TWICE since hunting here in 2012.
I saw this one in Oct and named him Freak.

I could see deer with my naked eye but got on the sticks and thru the scope. I identified Freak and shot HI shoulder. DRT That is where he fell. - little humor - My wife was up and in the bathroom when I shot -- just outside the window-- I went back in the house and asked,
Are you awake ? She said, I am NOW!!

Here are 2 better views of him.

That is a gore wound NOT a gun shot. I probed it and it was 2-3" deep. Fighting.

I used this barrel to prop his head up for the pic. He weight + 170 # . He had a sticker on EACH antler that made him 7 pts.
His left antler showed no sign of injury UNLESS during velvet ? I dunno. He was not a young deer, genetically deficient. I am glad to remove him from the breeding pool.

Obviously a mature Buck.

In your opinion was he “over the hill” going down w/age ?

In 08 I killed a 10 pt that I saw & missed in 06 blush In 08 he didn’t have the spread that he had 2 yrs earlier. Obviously the same BODY & antler SHAPE only narrower. frown

No I think he could have been a bigger deer with time. Bet he wasn't but a 4 1/2 year old.

Somewhere in the 250# range on hoof. Healthy as a mule when I killed him.

I will see if I can dig up a pic from the field.

Here is the only pic I can find. We aren't real big picture takers, kind of regret it on a few deer.

IMO he was an Adult but I agree he’s not an OLD deer.
Good Looking, Not gray or Grizzled from age.

Don’t be mistaken, I’d shot him in a N Y minute.
Congrats

Jerry

ps: If I let him walk, the next guy will NOT.

Here's a worn out dude. Had pics of him from 2 years before I killed him. Camera pics were him as an 8 pointer.

Notice his backbone protruding, could see ribs too. I am sure from being run down during the rut but he was an old booger for sure.

I shot him in a lot faster than a NY minute. From the time I saw him until he had a 60 grain Partition through both front shoulders was maybe 5 seconds.

Same stand as my narrow 8 exactly 1 week earlier. This was a bow kill.

Just realized this was actually a 9 point deer. Been long enough since I killed him and really checked out the rack.

It’s NOT an 8 by any normal count. He was a breeder & fighter.

Wanna see it ? No problem if not.

I wish this pic was digital. The mount is from the deer in the pic. His body was big, field dressed at 227# and I had to fold his head/neck to close the tailgate on my f-150. His feet were as big as my hands. It was all I could do to get that buck out of the woods. For reference, he’s 18.5” wide on the inside, 10” g2’s and 7&8” browntnes. All mass measurements were over 4”.

Ok, so this thread got me to thinking about just how many 8’s I did kill, i guess I got more than I thought.
I’ve found some more pics but will wait till tomorrow as I’m tired now.
All my mounts are in storage.....there’s some 8’s there....out of sight out of mind.
Also have a pretty wild mainframe 8 my brother shot about 10 years ago with some drops.
