Almost there! All I lack is finishing and finishing would be topping her off with a nice vintage Marbles or Lyman Tang sight. I have my "fancied up" Savage now, I'll start looking for the nice originals to add to my meager collection. Thanks to everyone that helped with the stock finishing suggestions. It came out flawless! I realize the purists won't probably be all excited about it, but, it's something I've wanted to do for a very long time. There will always be room for an octagon barreled 1899 in my rack...

that's some piece of wood!!! what kind is it? and where did you find that high grade of wood? are you still considering 24 lines per inch checkering or the like? I can't tell from the pics is the receiver and lever grayed? All in all, beauty custom gun!

Thanks for all the positive responses everybody! I bought the wood from Michael Kokulas at www.gunstockduplicating.comI asked for some fancy Walnut and he said he'd fix me up. He really did and I'm really proud of it. He duplicated the original Stock and fore end for me. The finish on the receiver and lever is a hard brushed nickel. Barrel is High Gloss Blue. The front sight bead insert is solid brass. It really stands out. I've been fiddlin around with this for a year+ now. I'm in a quandry about whether or not I should checker the stock and fore end. There is someone that has expressed an interest of using it for the illustrations of a checkering book they are writing. I just haven't decided. I have been watching Ebay for a vintage peep, but they are so dang high! I'm afraid to get it too dolled up because i might not want to hunt with it. Not really, I fully intend to hunt with her! I think that the 300 savage will make short work of any hogs down here!

FWIW...I like it uncheckered...and can't even fathom covering up that grain w/checkering.

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

Yup, that's a fine piece a work. Take it to huntin camp - folks will slobber on it.
I had a restocked .284 DL with wood like that on it. Guys couldn't believe I would take it outa the house. Now, the original F I had didn't leave the house.

Lt H,
That is spectacular!! You won't have to worry about hunting with an ugly rifle. Just don't trip. Damn, that's nice.
A Question: Is the fore end flatter on the bottom than a stock EG or is that the picture deceiving my eyes?

I think the pic is deceiving. It's identical to the stock one. Thanks again for all the kind comments y'all!
