I was taking a nap Saturday afternoon, and heard a noise. There was a hen peaking in the windows, and when I rolled over, she spooked. There are two videos of the results here: Hens and Poults in the Yard

Dad had 2 hens with 15-20 in the backyard last week. Half little bigger than a chicken other half a little smaller.
The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!

How many babies do hens generally raise?

I've seen a maximum of 9 from one hen. However, I'd say around us, 3-5 surviving to their first moult is about normal.
