FWIW, No comment on the merits of 40 mm to 50 mm. I used Burris Signature Zee medium rings to mount a 3x9 50 mm Burris E1 scope on my M70 30-06 which left about 1/8" clearance for the objective lens/bell.

My two bits here
I have no need for a 50mm BUT would it not be a help with exit pupil and make for a bit easier view at higher power?
Never a bad thing but not worth the bulk and weight to me. Might see where others would.
Regarding fixed vs variables - I always used 6x scopes and loved the brightness, foolproofness, and ease of view BUT after comparing a vx3 to my M8 and Meopta 6x42 found the VX3 even brighter with better color. Enhancements like black internals, nearly all scopes being fully multicoated now, and features like a ballistic reticle ( some might poo poo), or indexed turrets, mean variables offer many something more. I have also come to greatly appreciate using one at powers well under 6x for field of view and feel I had been missing out on this benefit. Leupold has supposedly beefed up their springs so it seems even less of an argument for a fixed 6.
For me reticle is a huge part of my decision, unfortunately preferring the #4 types. Scopes have gotten so competitive and what used to be next level features are now commonplace. A good thing for all of us. A 35 to 42 mm objective with modern lenses and coatings and positive clicking turrets should make for a good hunt for anyone. Good stuff. Well said. Thanks OT One thing I should clarify though, the Meopta I referenced is of the prior Artemis series not a Meo of any type. I can believe a brand new Meo or FX 6x42 would be brighter than my VX3 but when you have enough to spare that quality is a diminished return compared to the other benefits I mentioned.

I split the difference and generally go for 42-44mm objective scopes, then my mounts don't have to get too high & the gun is a bit lighter.

Fellas,I don't have your eyes and you don't have mine... Much merit in this comment. The eye of the beholder. For me, the reality is just about any scope in 3x9 configuration will work. - in good daylight. I have those. My personal criteria is low light conditions performance. This is where excellent glass and coatings pulls away from the rest of the pack and there are many of these to select from for that intended purpose. If it’s good at low light it’s great for other conditions. Jmo.

Shooting hours are the same in Texas, 40mm scopes work just fine for legal shooting hours. I agree for deer but what about hogs after dark? Legal or no?

Which is better for a hunting rifle and which do you prefer? I have always liked 42-44mm scopes but the 44mm is being replaced with the 50mm what is the advantages of this size and disadvantages? The bigger the better. :-)

40mm, or a 6x42 is my opinion.

The best low light scopes I have looked through were 56mm. Even the lowly Leupoold VX-5 3-15X565 beat out the Swarovski z5 5-25X52, Bushnell 6500 4 1/2-30X50, and Leupold VX-6 4-24 by six minutes. Of course all were on 15X. As soon as any of the others were turned up the VX-5 lost out. But there was no contest when the Swarovski z8i was included. It lasted twenty minutes longer than the VX-5, if memory serves me.

If you're only carrying it from the truck to an elevated blind, and don't mind an ugly set up, go ahead with the 50.
They just don't look right, to my eye, on hunting rifles.

I've grounded a few in the dark of night using a green kill light. Will be putting a thermal to work on an AR in 6.5 Grendel for just that purpose quite soon.

If I was hunting at night, or wanted the best possible low light performance, from a hide, I’d use one of those eyeshades...or eyeshields.
