Thought it was interesting how far apart the dovetails on the two rifles are. The solid frame is #217,xxx and takedown #270,xxx.

Anybody what the story is on the dovetail positions being different? If you are referring to the rear sight dovetail it has to do with when they were produced. The 1899's rifles and SR had the rear sight mounted out farther on the barrel. The 99-A, B, C & D had the rear sight located closer to the receiver. You have a post-WWI 1899-A and a 99-B.

Bottom gun is a prewar 99A. I think it is one of the best looking models. Not a lot of them around. Sure handles nice with the 24" barrel Mike. Too nice to hunt tho.
