[quote=JeffG]Anybody what the story is on the dovetail positions being different? Who knows, maybe the guys in the dovetail milling department had a little drinking problem. Just kidding, very nice pairo 99 thudy-thudys! I still think they were drinking OTJ. I have a long running joke with a buddy who is a big fly fisherman and prefers rods of the bamboo persuasion. Back "in the day" South Bend made pretty decent bamboo fly rods for the money. They didn't cost an arm and a leg and you could have bought them at any of the hardware stores that sold Savage 99s. I have restored a few South Bend rods and they, as do most, have quirks that are specific to their makers. South Bend rods will do funky things at the ferrule stations and the wraps on the guides all seem to lack a certain consistency. Anyway, the joke has been that to get these results Wes Jordan and the guys in the wrapping department must have partook of the "sauce" on a fairly regular basis. Wes Jordan started out with the Cross Rod Company and moved to South Bend when they acquired Cross in the 1920s. Wes Jordan is also a bit of a legend in the history of bamboo fly rods and he ended up a Orvis before passing away in the mid-70s. So, based purely on this anecdote, I'm sticking to my story on the guys in Savage's dovetail cutting department. Meanwhile, back at the ranch - those are some damn sexy 99s you have there Roy!

According to my research for the book the 99A was last cataloged in 1936 and that would have been the end of crescent buttplate production. I have one in 30-30 with a slightly lower serial number than Roy's but not as nice. What's the latest serial number anyone has seen for this model? David

Thanks Rick, that last serial number is 1938 production, two years later than it was last cataloged. If you are keeping records mine is 320964. It's a 30-30 with the 24" barrel and integral front sight. My data shows it was produced in 1929. David

Hey Roy,
If you ever want that B back, let me know. Same money. If not, that is ok.
I just don’t want to be a hinderance in stalling one of the best 30/30 Savage 99 collections going.
There was a pre-War R in 30-30 at the Savage Fest. One of only a few made. It was for sale but it sure wasn’t cheap.

Jeff Jeff, if time isn't an issue, sure, but it's not a big deal, happy to have it in your collection as well. We can talk PM. Let's make this a 30-30 thread, get out the cameras fellas!

.300 Sav .30-30 .30-30 David, that last one I picked off of Facebook. It seems about a year late for production but might have been a special order. Probably had plenty of leftover parts to make it.

I don’t have pics yet but what I have in 30-30:
Barrel Band 99G A 99G that was originally an 1899H in 22HP. Redone at factory for a Savage employee. A 1895. Savage sent me a letter saying it was estimated to be an R&D gun. Shoots great. Serial 70XX Pre war uncheckered EG. 99B
I guess I like them as well.

30-30's SRC 99B, early with 26" barrel 99A, late with 24" barrel, already mentioned in this post 99G 99H 99EG, early uncheckered I'm nearing completion of my vault. Once it's finished it'll be easier to get the rifles out for photography purposes. I just don't have time to get them out now. Winter's coming on and I've got a lot to do before it sets in. We're already getting freezing temperatures at night. David
