One of the things that came up on the 30-284 rotor thread was that the 284's didn't have the cross screw in the receiver that holds the rotor because of the c-clip in front of the rotor. Well, I had this early 284 so I checked it out. It has both the cross screw and the c clip. #10623xx, no LBC. Was told 1963, Davids book says 1964. It has both a cross screw and a c clip, AND, the 284 was the only 99F with a barrel w/o a raised rear sight boss like the other lightweights, so the 284 forearm also did not have the corresponding cutout for it. So this early 284 has the right receiver for a 284(c clip) and the right forearm for a 284. The barrel does not have Savage markings, only "284" as if a rebarrel. It looks refinished to a flat black. My guess is it has been redone, but was an original 284, but for some reason retains the cross screw even tho it has the c clip slot machined into the receiver. Or, this has both the cross screw and c clip because Savage experimented early on. Any guesses?

Another neat one. You keep coming up with these odd, interesting 99s; have you considered substituting odd for the fire in your handle (joke intended) . On the barrel boss, I had a 71 99F .243 that also did not have a boss for rear sight.

That sounds like one of those 'Series A' guns. Was the barrel marked with Model F like earlier ones?

Geez Wally, that's a can-o-worms, now we're gonna have to check all our post-mil rotary's, to see if they started cutting the C-clip slot in the receiver, AND the cross-screw holes,...whether they started as a 284 or not.

FWIW, found a pic of 1075228 99F 284 made in 1964, that does not have the cross-screw, so Roy's version was gone by then, but that's still 12k+ Savage rifles later. Here's pics of left and right side of receiver. Also, it has pressed checkering at this SN. Roy, David's book shows 1964 starting approximately 1070711; JB Boren, over on the FB site, has recorded his observed low for 1964 at 1069213, so an observation earlier than David has in his book.

#1069952 99DL 284 does not have a cross screw, about 7600 later. That's as close as I can get. I've got a few 1964 rifles in other cartridges but am going to have to take forearms off to check for a machined slot in the receiver on another day.

Here is another later 99F without a barrel boss. This one is a 1969, .300 Savage.
