A gunshop employee says we can ship a new firearm back to the manufacturer for repair by UPS without having a FFL holder involved. Does this sound correct? A friend has the OK from the service department at the factory, but has never shipped one before nor have I. Thanks.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing gun manufacturers have something more than a business license from the burg they reside in.
Send away.

Just don't use the UPS Store.
They are not UPS. They are a private franchise and they do not ship firearms, any firearms.

If your gun store has an account with UPS, there should be no problems. If they don't, it depends on the route driver. Some won't take firearms--the guy who runs the routes around here won't, even though company policy says it is permitted. He says it is "orders" from his supervisor. It's an 80-mile drive one-way for me to the nearest UPS terminal, so I have been shipping with USPS for the last few years.
I have actually had no trouble with USPS in the way of lost or misplaced firearms. UPS has "lost" several. They have all eventually been found, but only after they reimbursed me for the loss and turned the complaint over to one of their personnel who follows up on lost firearms claims. The hassle and loss of time is just not worth it.

My experience mirrors Bens', take it to post office, answer no questions other than those that appear on the key pad, and be on your way.

No keypad at my post office. Must be a big city thing. I'm curious now. Unless there's something on the clerk's side he spins around for customers. I'll check this out tomorrow. Our post office is in the back of a 2-Pump gas station, country store thing. Get me a thick cut bologna sammich and a root beer while in there

Yes. It’s alright. You are shipping a gun you legally own back to the manufacturer. There is no transfer. I did this with Ruger with no problem. It’s legal.

You can ship long guns via USPS, FEDEX OR UPS. You cannot ship via The UPS Store.
You can ship to a manufacturer, repair facility & they can return ship directly to you.
