The stock has been cut down? That buttplate isn't original? Am I right to assume that?

I think what you're seeing in the one pic is the foreshortened camera angle. Look at the first pic and it's obviously full factory length.

Right - the last few years before 1964, including this rifle's year, used plastic buttplates. It hasn't been cut - a clue to that being the gentle curve in the the wood. No gunsmith would add that curve when shortening a stock!

Hey, Ron, I thought the rock pile was original and kind of cool! I did use some felt to protect it from sharp edges.

Before anyone else makes a final decision, one PM asked about the plastic buttplate.
This is a rifle I picked up from a kid who inherited it from his father. There is a chance the buttplate is a new/old stock replacement, since when I look at it with a very critical eye, it is not the perfect fit I have seen on other pre-64's. The kid knows almost nothing about the rifle and was going to use it as a loaner for his nephew to hunt elk this year before I offered him enough to buy a new rifle in the caliber of his choice!
I will let 99guy off the hook if he decides he doesn't want it, in the interest of full disclosure.

There’s absolutely nothing incorrect about this rifle. The only thing missing is the front sight hood. The ‘composition’ buttplate replaced the aluminum plate early in 1959 (this rifle was serialized in June ‘61). As far as perfect fit, the wood on all M70’s should be ever so slightly proud to the metal or composition buttplate. Personally, I would be much more concerned about originality if the plate and wood were perfectly even. YMMV....

This. And the transition from aluminum to composite may have even been earlier - I have seen guns which date to ‘58 with the composite.
