Pick a bullet that shoots well and go kill an elk. Most of the average, over the counter bullets will work at 308 velocities. A TTSX would be among the last I’d chose for the 308.

If you are using slower powders with the Partition, go with faster.

Per an earlier post, 4895 type.

Also, lean on the scale a bit, those Partition might respond well with a little pressure.

I’d agree with this, and I’m a Barnes fan.

All you gotta do is hit them where it counts. My nephew uses a 308 and has been hunting big game two years, and has killed two elk.. I made a load with varget and 155 scenars for him, it’s performed very well.

I know guys like to over plan, but just a little perspective.. I’ve been bow hunting almost a month now after a few certain bulls, got two days left.. I’ve had this bull at 47 yards with no shot, and several other times from 100-200 yards. give me a 308 shootin ANYTHING, and I’d have a punched tag by now..just take something that shoots good and make a good shot, all there is to it

See the deceased by scenar thread. I'd hunt the scenars.

My wife has killed many elk with her 308 running 165 accubonds over 46 gr of Varget. She has taken them from 20-450+ yds with expected results. Any bullet I've ever recovered has been around 65% retention weight.

Not on your list , but I've shot a lot of partitions that shoot fairly well but accubonds always seem to be the ticket with my rifles. Though probably not as tough as partitions, they are known for good penetration and holding together. Its my go to in all my rifles.

I have a hunting buddy who has used the Browning BLR .308 with 150gr Corlokt ( factory or handloaded) since 1970. Elk, muleys, and one big cow bison ( Henry Mountains wild azz bison, no Elsie the dairy cow) He "tried" the 180gr and didn't like it at all, felt it didn't open up well. A "4" grouper will kill every elk past 400yds. "My" experience is that elk rarely give you a good broadside shot and a bullet that holds together gives you more options, but Hey, confidence is a big part of any hunt! IF you can accept limiting your shots to rib cages and/or head/neck, go for it with the scenars. But have fun and be safe!

The loads I had success with my .308 were the Federal 165 Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and the Speer Nitrex 165 gr Grand Slam. Both long discontinued and I haven’t hunted with the .308 in years. It’s a behind the door rifle with Barnes 140 gr MPG handloads for chicken-killing coyotes and such. Happy Trails

I'm trying to decide between a 180 Sierra Gameking at 2650 or a 165 Accubond at 2720. Both soot sub-MOA. I'm leaning Sierra.

Two of my partners run 44.0grs of RL15 with the 165gr. Nosler Accubonds in their 308win. In fact one partner killed an elk 3 weeks ago on a damage control permit.

If your rifle likes them, the 150 grn partition kills everything dead.

Myself and my boys have killed a lot of deer, antelope, sheep, mtn goat, and half a dozen elk with them. Havn't recovered a single one.

The mountain goat was shot in the butt and the bullet traveled full length of the animal.

If you haven't recovered a single one I suggest you look for a different bullet

Here is another tip. I am no expert on elk . Last 7 years I have taken an elk guess I am very fortunate. Started with accubonds got them but had SOME difficulty finding them. Tried 200gr Barnes LRX .again 1 shot also hit a rib and went through without expanding. I got it but .5 mile down the mountain. Dropped to a Barnes 175gr LRX and not 1 elk or mule deer has gone more than 50 yards this is in 300wm. So if you choose a barnes I would recommend a lighter grain bullet than a copper lead bullet of your choice. Also I would practice shooting off of a good pair of sticks or what ever you plan to use to steady the gun. NO NICE FANCY BENCHES IN WOODS. So your accuracy will probably not be as good if your like me. I try to practice when I go over to range using my sticks or the pole that holds our shed up. And also remember pay attention to guide how he tracks and finds blood spots if you have to track 1. I have gained alot of knowledge from different people. Have fun pay attention . GOOD LUCK HUNTING.

LOL ........ I like to recover game, not bullets. Exit holes help to make that happen.

Just curious why you say this, uncle?
