I have killed a number of elk and mule deer using 155 scenars in a .308. So has my kid.

They work fine.

The last elk my son shot with his 308 had a 150 grain partition.

Worked fine.

I’m mostly shooting 155 scenars in my 308s now based on MacKay’s endorsement and the observation (>250 rounds so far) that they shoot inch or less for three rounds in just about any 308 (seven bolt and one semi-automatic).

The mountain goat was shot in the butt and the bullet traveled full length of the animal.

If you haven't recovered a single one I suggest you look for a different bullet

Just curious why you say this, uncle?

talking about animal or bullet. If he talking about bullet sorry my bad. Thought they where talking about animal.

unclefish,

These days a big game bullet often isn't judged by how well it kills an animal, but whether it exits. Apparently many animals won't die unless the bullet exits.

On the other hand, the people who often brag about bullets that exit, also often brag about how much weight their favorite bullet retains.....

John - really enjoyed all your work on the 308 Win and all other articles you've done. Keep up the great work. In many ways the the 308 Win may be one of the best for bullet use and bullet integrity based on it's velocities.

I've used a generic load he listed in a .308 article several years back in multiple rifles. 46.5 grains varget with 150 ballistic tip. It's been a super performer for my use and has shot an inch or under in multiple rifles all at the same OAL. .308's are just EASY to please.

OK that's funny. He was talking bullet.

I would not have thought to use a match bullet for big game. What's the story on it?

I have a TC encore that has been a "lucky gun" the past two hunting seasons, mainly as a ML. Just put a .308 barrel shooting a 165 accubond. Was only getting 1.5 inch groups. But superstitious me I'll take it over my regular elk guns for hunting tomorrow, local cow elk and spike permits, so not much money invested in this hunt.

I would go with your Scenar load, my guides wife has shot elk out to 400 yards with a 243, just hit them right. I had a Weatherby Ultralight that I was having a hard time getting to group and tried the 178 grain Hornady ELD-X and it now shoots bugholes! Good luck.

Decided on the 150tsx as I can use it here in California as well. Guide said shots will be 300 yards tops, most being around 100yds. We leave Saturday. Weather seems chilly, but hoping for a good time, and hopefully some elk.

My daughter has killed several elk with a 308 and 150 federal fusions. Including breaking shoulders on one of her bulls.

That is all you should be considering.

Reminds of the Western movies. The survival of the shooting victim hinged solely upon “getting the bullet out.” Just far fetched added drama.

I can safely report that a 180 Sierra Game King from a 308 will handily dispatch an elk. And with little fan fare <G>

Where’s the fun in that?

Robertham1: I hope I am not to late - I highly recommend, after much successful use on Deer, Mtn. Goats, Black Bear and an Elk, the wonderful Nosler 165 grain Partitions.
Good luck on your Hunt.
