If you want to wait a few years, I have been considering writing a book...

Wayne VanZwoll and our own Muledeer have two most excellent books. I haven't seen Muledeer's book, but VanZwoll's big Elk and Elk Hunting has an awfully lot of good information in it. Another fine book is the one by Mike Eastman. Check both the earlier version and the latest, since they has slightly different information. Also, Eastman's Hunting Journal and Bowhunting Journal have annual information on the best locations in each State on elk, mule deer, antelope and others.

I have several.....but there's a reason the asking price on ecology and elk management is so silly. It's available right now for around 40 bux and is the size of a ream of paper. .....it's a steal. Brads book has fantastic pictures but is not the same league as far as information goes.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

Got Wayne to autograph it at the Atlanta NRA show two years ago. Wow....what a gentleman...great guy.

The Elk Hunter by Don Laubach and Mark Henckel. Highly recommended in addition to some of the others suggested here. Happy Trails

For archery hunters, The Playbook by Paul Medel, aka The Elknut is worth its weight in gold.

My favorite Elk Hunting Book is the book that I recorded all of my elk kills in. With only two pages and only one line per elk, its a quick reader.

I've never read a book on elk hunting, never watched a video/DVD, and don't do "hunting shows."
Being out there with your eyes wide open is the best teacher. The other stuff will fill your head with too much conflicting information, some of which will be of dubious quality, or unsuited to the terrain you hunt. If you can deer hunt on your hind feet, you can elk hunt. Treat them like big whitetails or blacktails and you'll sort it out.
I like the Elk Country book (though I haven't opened it in years) because it gives a solid general overview of habits and behavior (without excessive information), but mostly because it has superb photography to get the juices flowing.
