What length barrel would you all build a 6 Creedmoor on? Open country deer, lope, predator rig.

Otter, I just had one put together for the exact purposes you're considering and settled on 22".

I do have 3 sets of 243 dies,a chit ton of brass, and a bunch of boolits. You do make a valid point.

Otter6, I looked the 6 Creed over every way I could think of, if you forget the hipe, and compare the 2 ,you are better off screw a 1x8 barrel on a .243 and it will kick ass, I have put 3 of them together. and they are good to 1000 yrds easy with a 107 match king and retumbo.forget all this crap about burning barrels with the .243, i have over 3500 rnds down the barrel of one of my .243s and it still will shoot 3/4 " groups. One of the advantages of rifles chambered (and rifled) for the latest rounds is muzzle velocity doesn't matter nearly as much with high_BC bullets. But many shooters still apparently believe a 50 or even 100 fps "advantage" in muzzle velocity matters more than the bullet.

Which means an inch or two of barrel length doesn't matter much.

Otter,
Rio has a good point on the .243 - particularly with dies, brass and bullets already in hand.
OTOH, I have .243 dies, brass, bullets and a rifle so chambered (also 22") with a 1:8 twist and I still cobbled together a 6 Creedmoor. laugh

It's somewhere in between Vermont and my place right now so this is the best I can do for an image. 1:8 #3 Bartlein @ 22" in a hefty Grayboe Terrain stock.

Truth.
JB, have you conjured something for the 6mm barrel you acquired a few months back?

For me, barrel length is about balance ("feel"), intended purpose, and muzzle blast... and I'll admit, to some degree or another, aesthetics.

I don't give a flip about 50 fps.

I've built quite a few guns like this. Application is what dictates barrel length. If you are running in say, a 500 yard "kill box", then you can do it with an 18" barrel. If your attempting to run past that, even the most efficient bullets loose some steam and velocity becomes a whole lot more relevant. This is where the 24"+ length starts to work better. I've never had a client approach me about going beyond 26" on a 6mm for a hunting app. We do them for square range competitive rifles all the time. Totally different application though.

If your taking the gun from truck to hill top, run a long stick and stretch your legs with it. Crawling around or road hunting coyotes from a truck window will command a shorter barrel.

C.
