Last week we had to go do some work at a chemical plant outside of Nashville, TN. Got there early Fri morning (around 4:30) and according to the guy at the hotel it was 4 degrees. I know it felt cold as hell. After working for 2 days with temps in the teens and ice and snow everywhere, I couldn't wait to get back to south Louisiana. Down here we freak out when it gets below freezing. I'll take heat and 100% humidity any day over that cold stuff. Don't know how you Northern guys do it.

LSU Fan,

I'm not so sure. We real men just take the attitude that heck it ain't cold.
It's been sub zero here for the past 24 hours and nearly as cold for a week.
But I haven't noticed except for a bit of frostbite on two of my fingers and my pneumonia is acting up a bit.

I visited perfect weather back in 1996. And it is Arizona. All you need is a house in Phoenix and a Summer home in Flagstaff and bingo you're in.

I was in NO one summer and would have given anything for a snowbank to jump into.

As far as choosing between boiler room heat and humidity in the Summer and serious cold in the Winter. Migration is the only answer.

Unless you eat crawdads, nutrias and 'gators all year round.

If I could find crawfish cheap year round, I'd be eating them every weekend. As far as gator I'm about to lose my source. My father in law is a nucience (sp?) hunter for the W&F so I usually had all the gator meat I knew what to do with. Now it looks like he's going to hang it up. I'm still trying to talk him into doing it for another year.

Norm, do you real men take that heck, it ain't cold attitude when your frozen gonads play The Bells of StMarys against each other when you walk?

I have only seen zero outside a commercial freezer once in my life. Don't particularly care if I never see it again either.

Norm,
Looks like your going to get some nasty stuff today, they are just giving us rain but back toward your way it looks like snow, ice and rain. Where else could you get all three in a day? I think we will be getting it toward the last of the week.

BCR,

I feel singularly unqualified to talk about cold when our Alaskan and Canadian brothers have much more severe weather experience than I do.

However, I do remember January about 20 years ago when I was investigating an accident after a winter storm. It was so cold that my ballpoint pen froze up and I couldn't make notes until I got back in the car and thawed the dang thing out. After that I always kept a pencil handy for harsh weather.

Later I called dispatch and asked if she knew how cold it was. The answer was minus 27 degrees F. Not too bad but the wind made it feel colder.

One day about that long ago I took my new S&W M659 to the police range to see how it shot. It was -15 F, snowing and windy. I could only see the 50 yard target between gusts that blew snow and reduced vision to a couple of feet. Great day. Still fondly remember that as one of my best shooting days. Got a little lonely though. No one else came out to shoot that day. Wonder why?

BTW you do wear your fur lined jock strap on such days.

Norm, I am now fully convinced that underneath the polite demeanor you are a card carring MASCHOCIST! Even when I lived up in the north I didn't subject myself to that kind of punishment intentionally! Well, not often anyway.

-27 degrees. If it got that cold here I'd call in sick and stay home under the electric blanket.

7400Hunter,

I ran into a spattering of rain early this morning on the way to work. Then the sun came out and temp got up to a balmy 25 deg F. Now, unfortunately, it is clouding up and looking nasty.

What can I say, I carry a couple of big towels for the sweat and bat mosquito's. The price one must pay if they like to shoot I guess.

T LEE,

I don't mind sweatin' much. I do object to mosquitos though. I have heard recently that some areas of the states are starting to see cases of malaria where none have been reported for years.

I do keep a can of Off handy for such occasions.

Ah heck, our skeeters drink "off" for a chaser to the blood!

I worked in Venice,La for two years and hated the skeeters with a passion!!! Nothing like having to take a portable shop fan with you to the flight line at night to keep those blood sucking Hell bugs from toting you off. Now I remember why I hate Louisiana so much...

C'mon now Cheaha, it wasn't really that bad was it? Hope you got to do some fishing while you were in Venice. Some of the best redfish and spec fishing in the world near there. Duck hunting is usually pretty good too.

Dusk is usually the worst time for skeeters if you're near water. Wait till a couple of hours after sunset and it's not bad outside. You do get in the habit of wearing long sleeves in the woods pretty quick.

LSU Fan; I was born and raised in Zachary. I miss family, friends, and the food a bit, but it would take a pretty big ole boy to drag me back down for more than a visit.
We have freedoms, and hunting like you can't imagine.
And, most of the time it's a dry cold. I've shoveled snow more than once in cut-offs and a tee shirt. However, if the winds blowing it's a little different story! -memtb

LSU,

The fishing was world class! We just dropped our lines off the production/drilling rigs and reeled them in.

Pretty decent bird hunting as well. Shot a few Coo-Doos(sp)

Nice place to visit but.....

Well, we had a varitable heat wave today here in MI. It got up to 20 degrees. I had to put my shorts on Actually, it was a great day to be on the ice fishing. Limited out on Gills and bagged a few Crappie too. Nothing like being on the ice in winter. Quiet as a churchmouse out there. Only noise is the occational auger makin a hole. No boats, no jet ski's, and no skeeters. Nothin but you and the fish. May it never end.
