How do I tell if my 71 is long tang or short tang? # 21964 is a 1942 rifle if my information is correct.

If it is 1942 it is short tang. The upper tangs of these earlier guns are 3 7/8" in length. The later (post-September, 1937) Model 71's have the "short tang, long comb" configuration. The tang is 1" shorter. Here is some info http://www.leverguns.com/articles/model71_info.htm

Go to Gunbroker and compare the wrist area of a 1936 or 1937 M71 to a later 1940 or 1950 rifle. The difference will be clear.

Winchester never referred to M71’s as “Deluxe”. Winchester listed and referred to them as the M71 “Special”....

I just bought a 1936 standard about 2 months ago,was about the last gun on my bucket list.I shot it last week end, love it.I don't know for sure how to determine short and long tangs as of yet.

Shows my age I guess as our auto were "deluxe" if they had any upgrades.
No "LTDs" etc.
