I only pick mushrooms that I know like morels, chicken and hen of the woods, puffballs, honey, angel wings, chanterelles, boletes, pinkies and afew other others. I have a small library of mushroom books that helped me, but there are some shrooms that are recommended to eat, and a couple pages later you see one that looks like the good one and is poisonous. You have to learn about what kind of gills some have, stem structures, spore prints and such. Best way is to go out with someone who knows shrooms and picks them, if you're lucky enough to find someone like that. Better way is join a mushroom club, almost every state has 1 or 2 such clubs and membership is usually free. Here you go out with experienced mycologists on forays thru the woods and get a hands on education. The clubs also have classes indoors and sometimes the shrooms are cooked and you get a chance to taste them. Remember there are old mushroom hunters and there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old bold mushroom hunters!

I only pick the ones I know. Chanterelles, Lobster, Morels, Matsutaki, Giant puff balls. However if I now find a Chicken of the Woods, I'll grab it and do a bunch or research on it. Saw what I believed were Turkeytails, but left them as I wasn't 100% sure.

The only wild mushrooms I've eaten are morrels. Never tried anything else, and probably wouldn't. Did find some of these the other day, and posted this pic on here. Someone said you could eat them. I'll pass.[Linked Image]

I'm fascinated by the wild mushroom hunting, but until someone savvy gives me hands on training I'll just buy the little cans of stem, and pieces.

Wabi, that's me. I have picked the morrels around here in the spring, and they're good eating. But, I draw the line there, because I know nothing about the rest of them, and I prefer to just eat what the grocery sells, rather than eat a poison wild one.

Besides Chicken of the Woods, I hunt another fowl. Pheasant Back mushroom. Don't have a personal photo, images can be found on the internet.

Any idea what this one is? It's on my hunting property, and I don't shroom hunt. (Don't know enough about it)

An unemployed Jester, is nobody's Fool.

the only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker, is observation. all the same data is present for both. The rest, is understanding what you're seeing.

That's a chicken of the woods, very edible when young and not all bug infested.

i picked a 5 gallon bucket of popinkies today at my camp. also known as honey mushroom. i could have picked 10 times that many but i only picked the nicest buttons and young ones. this is a hell of a year for them. they're pretty easy to ID and one of the few that i pick.
