This is a later model 527 with the curved bolt handle. The scope's a 2-7x33 Leupold. What's the lowest detachable rings/scope combination the bolt handle will clear and return close to zero if detached for open sight use?

43 Shooter,

I have a similar setup, just put it together in June: 527 Carbine 7.62x39 with VX-3i 2.5-8x36. I have the 2018 527M with the reshaped bolt handle. I'm using these rings:
14B1L 30mm CZ 527 Quick Detach Medium Rings

There's a lot of pictures of this setup online. It's higher than I wanted at first, but it is comfortable and works great for me. Your objective is 33mm, but I don't think you could much lower with the mount due to the high bolt throw.

The QD mount return to zero has been absolutely perfect for off hand and prone shooting, I have not had a chance to test it out on bags.

Good luck with your project. I think you will be pleased with this rifle / scope combo.

I gave you the wrong part #. That was for 30mm.

I'm using 1B1L 1 inch CZ 527 Quick Detach Medium Rings

You can alter your bolt with parts from CZ.

I had that exact combo and used Warne fixed mediums. I don't think lows would have worked due to the bolt

Seems there was a guy who would modify CZ bolts to make the throw less high. Do you have any idea who this is?

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Newer 527 Carbine with 2.5-8X36 VX 3 mounted in Med. Warne QD's.......yes it returns to zero.

Older 527 American with 3.5-10X40 VX 3 mounted in Med Warn Fixed.
This rifle also has a Calhoon modified bolt handle.

Calhoon modified bolt handles......you might want to check before ordering though.
I ran across his obituary while doing this search.

Calhoun, the .19 caliber shop, sells them. Might want to swap yours as part of the deal. Sells low rings to go with it too, IIRC. I'd check it against the factory part.

What I was trying to say is that CZ makes a replacement bolt with a lower throw angle. They seem to be out right now though. They are on the CZ site.

Actually you were right the first time.

You can buy a replacement bolt "handle" from CZ and alter (install it on) your original bolt. smile

Newer rifles come with the bent handle.

Calhoon will swap your old style bolt handle with one that he modified. It was only $40 when I got one about 10 years ago.....his web site says the swap is $53 now.
Same thing with the RVB modified magazine. He used to charge $40 to modify your mag and bottom metal......last time I looked it was over $90. yikes....I'm glad I set my rifle up back when I did.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

I bought a pair of 14B1L rings, only to find out the front ring (without recoil key) doesn't tighten on the 527 dove tail. Tried it on both front and rear dove tail. The rear ring tightens on the rear dove tail fine.

I guess I received a defective ring?

if not a hard kicker i've had good luck with tikka t3 aluminum rings. you will have to drive the pin out as it won't line up for the cz.

Just an update: Called Warne about the issue and received a pair of replacement rings after a few days. Both rings lock up on the rail firmly. Minimum bolt handle clearance with 14B1L medium 30mm rings and a VX6 1-6 scope.

Thanks, bro. I also like Warne a lot, have about 10 sets of rings in various configurations.

James Calhoon. But his alterated bolt handles cost more than the replacement CZ handle. And, they're easy to swap out.

I used this rail and low Weavers. To me, this is the lowest possible combo, maybe not as pretty, but works well. Allows front ring to move forward, which may or not be an issue.
