Looking for a replacement bullet for the Hornady 55gr sp w/c. I bought these "bulk" 55's as a cheap way to get some SHTF type rds put together and put away for a rainy day. Long story short... they shoot like crap in the two accurate rifles I tried them in, so I'm looking to switch up to something that shoots better across the board . Besides better accuracy... they must be CHEAP, stabilize in a 12 twist ( 14 twist even better) , and tough enough to kill a deer shot thru the ribs. What I see out there so far is...

Speer 55gr sp
Mid south 55 gr
Dogtown 55gr

Anyone have any experience with any of these?

The only bullet I've used in 22 caliber for deer was in the early 70's -- Winchester available in bulk. They fit your requirements, cheap, tough and accurate enough. I believe I was getting sub MOA with my 22-250.

I prefer classic.

Look at american reloading site for Speer 55 Gr. Gold dot bonded. Accurate in my guns and cheaper than Hornady 55s...

I bought some of those bulk Hornady 55s since the standard box version was so accurate in my 22-250 (better than v-max in this rifle). The bulk are pretty bad in the 22-250 and a very accurate AR-15, but around MOA in my M700 223. Whole different ballgame than the Nosler 2nds I get.
I've settled on the Nosler "shots" 50 gr from the Pro Shop for my bulk AR ammo. I get under 3/4" in my Rock River Coyote rifle. These are over supply from Australia rabbit ammo I think. Haven't tried the 55 gr version. I haven't tried them on deer, but the coyotes don't like them.

The 55gr Dogtowns are the Nosler SHOT's bullets.
Accurate but the have a very thin jacket, IMO too thin for deer.

Ditto regarding those those bullets. Truth be told, the 55 Hornady sp cannelured bullets shoot dizzyingly accurately in my AR so I buy whichever one is the best price in bulk.

Thanks... I'll give those Speer's a try then. I actually had decent groups with the H 55's in the 100ct boxes a few yrs back, but the bulk ones nowadays not so much. I netted one 3/4" group in load development, but most were in the 1 1/2" range. I want something that shoots sub moa easily in a proven rifle .

The bulk 55 gr. Hornady bullets come apart when fired from my 1-7 twist AR. The jacket comes lose at the nose and they start tumbling.

Hornady 55g with the cannalure are the toughest, second by Sierra spt.

Toughest of all 55g is the Speer bonded Gold Dot. Midway has them and they are very, very accurate in my 14T 22/250 at 3700 with varget, IMR 4320, and Win 760, AA2700.

Agree with all this...haven't tried the 55 Gold Dot on game yet...hopefully in a couple days..

But yeah..they were easy to get them to shoot well...
