A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Nice cow! Always good to roll them before noon, makes much easier cutting. Congrats Bob.

Nice cow, KW!
Man, I really need to find a decent 1895 to call my own. Haven’t seen one in a shop in a long time. Gunsmith has one in his safe. Old original 30-40. Beautiful rifle, and it ain’t for sale.
What’s the deal with the Browning/Winchester/Japchester....? I’ve seen pics of some with nice dark wood and checkering, some with lighter plain wood uncheckered, and some with and with out a tang safety? Are they all Miroku built? Any to stay away from or search out?
Thinking a nice shooter repro in -06 is what I need. Doable under a grand?

I' have one of the reproduction carbines in .30-40, bought new close to ten years ago; well-made, accurate gun. I've only used it for cast bullet shooting, but have no doubt it would do well with jacketed loads as well.

Was that a Winchester or Browning?

MM.
I have a Browning in 30/06 that is a tack driver. I put a Providence Tool #21 Lyman copy aperture sight on it. I kilt a nice 5x6 bull with it and 180 RN Rem factory ammo in 2015. I stripped all that tacky polyurethane finish off of it this past summer and give it a nice oil finish. It is my go to culling rifle when needed at cousins exotic game ranch! It, naturally has no tang safety. I also put the thinnist pachmayr decelerator pad on it they make. Doesn’t slide out of shoulder or on slick floor in corner. Feels great. Easier on my gimp right shoulder too. Deadly with factory 180 RN corlokts.
I also have a japchester in 30/06 that has the checkered stock and tang safety. Someone stripped stock on it and oil finished it too! They kinda weren’t too careful with the chekering. But that really doesnt bother me. Its just kinda taking up room in my old wood gun cabinet. There if needed. Has sling swivels and sling on it. IMHO these muroku’s are top notch rifles. But I much prefer the older Brownings. If you can find a Browning in either .30 Army or .30 Govt. I strongly suggest you snag it!!!!!
My dream rifle would be a standard 95 in .30 Army with an original Lyman #21 in the same condition and the .35 shown with cow above. That .35 is a borderline safe queen and many have chastised me for using it afield. But I don’t care!!! These rifles were meant for the mountaIns and woods!!! I have a real nice 1915 vintage SRC in .30 Army. Awesome bore. Should prolly just be satisfied with it. As I prolly won’t be able to afford any more 95’s in this lifetime ! 🤣🤣🤣
Oh edit, a Browning or New Winchester, doable under a grand? Possibly. But seems a grand is the popular tariff on them in good condition. $895 may not be difficult either but rare.
Wishing you good luck!!!

Thanks KW! So, the repro Winchester and Brownings are both Miroku built? The Winchester repros are the ones with checkering and tang safety? Definitely would want to avoid the tang safety. Im thinking something like this : https://www.gunbroker.com/item/789323692This one is uber! Checkered but I can’t tell if it has the tang safety. It’s listed as a browning so maybe not? ETA- Saw good pic of the tang, no safety. Wonder what this will go at. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/789893348Who wants to buy a Sako L61r or trade for a 1895?!?!

Did you see the one up in the Alaska forum? Not a fan of scout scopes, but that looks like one hell of a handy thumper!

Was that a Winchester or Browning? Mine has Winchester stamped on the tang. No checkering on the stock. I though the Brownings and Winchesters were mechanically the same. Maybe they aren't.

That bottom tifle in 30/40 is sweet!!! I just can’t handle those big thick recoil pads on the top one. But, a new stock could be fitted if one felt ambitious. And it could probably be had for under a grand too, due to that pad! Might be a sleeper. Then again many are not bothered by such trival things!

I like that bottom one too. Interested to see where it goes.
The thick pad can be replaced easy enough. As long as they didn’t cut it too short, a slim1/2” shotgun pad to replace it wouldn’t bother me at all.

Here's my scout scope equipped, apex predator of 95's: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...ng-1895-scout-rifle-project#Post13233780Since I'm in close proximity of polar bears, black bears, and brown bears, I believe I'll keep it in the dog sled during my spring mushing expeditions north from home base, and inland from home base. Is it just me, or is a 95 a weird gun? It feels part fighting weapon, part hunting rifle.
