Alright everybody,
Anybody got a favorite .22 rifle from when they were a kid?
Be careful, you might "date" yourself.

Mine was an old Western field single shot bolt action I got from Monkey Wards. I've still got it and it still shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards. Not much bluing left, but I like it as much as the day I got it. Hey, it ain't THAT old....

Remington 581. Sold the dang thing, along with a ruger bearcat I got at K-Mart for 54.00. Got each of my 2 boys - guess what - Rem 581s'. Dang good .22.

A Remington 12 pump gun with an octagon barrel, a Lyman tang peep sight, and a Beeches front sight. Burned a lot of Remington red/white box 22 Longs, since I (incorrectly) thought that a 29 grain bullet would be faster and more powerful that a 40 grain bullet from a 22 Long Rifle.

The youth 22lr of my dreams I got only a couple of years ago. It is a Nylon 66. I watched the commercial on tv when I was 10 of how it could drop off a cliff and still shoot. I dreamed of that rifle growing up. I think it was advertised on tv for $49. When I saw one a couple of years ago, I could not put it down until the paperwork was done. I think it cost $200. Not sure if it was a good deal or not, but we both seemed happy.

The only functionally reliable one we had was the single shot Winchester bolt with the "pull back" cocking mechanism and the chrome lever safety.

Can't recall the model but it cost less than $20.00 back around 1950. Some SOB stole it.

We also had a Remington .22 Short gallery pump. The ex wife got that and another SOB ended up with it.

Funny you should mention that one. I got one when I was 21, (1961), and the same ex wife and the same SOB got that one too.

I bought a RUGER 77/22 the first year of production ( cant recall what year sometime in the early to mid 80s) I kept up with the number of squirrels I killed with that rifle, just over 300 as I recall, it was a great little rifle with alot of good memories, I cant remember why I sold it. Probably for another 22lr. Ive owned at least 2 more 77/22s since the old original but they just aint the same................547.

I'm glad you brought up the Nylon 66. I've still got my Apache Black 66. It's become a rack queen. I can't beleive how much they are going for these days at the shows.
I really liked shooting it, but my best memories were with the old SS Western Field.

Marlin Model 25, got it when I was 14-15 and I still have it some 25 years later.

Remington 521-T. My father bought it new in 1948 for $48, it was handed down to me when I was about 14. What a great shooter. It was the first gun I ever fired, somewhere around the age of three. I can remember that day still, sitting on the ground between his knees and pulling the trigger, not having a clue as to what I was doing. The sweetest smell in the world, when that bolt pulled out a fresh fired round.

Here's an oddball. I saved up my money from farm work when I was 11 to buy a beautiful lever action from Sears. It was(and I still have it) an 'Erma Werke'. I got it because it was about $40 cheaper than the M94/22. I've often tried to estimate how many rounds I put throught it. Hard to be sure but it wouldn't be less that 25,000.

The smell of a fresh fired .22 case still takes me back to my youth.

My first 22 was a Winchester 67A at age 10 (1962) Wish I still had that one. Cupple of years back I picked up a 67, (not 67A) which has the grooved fore-arm. Just like the one Dad had from the 30's! I'm one happy camper now!
Also, my Cousin had a 62A like Terrys. Got one of them of my own now!

Remington 512, Redfield 3/4" scope.

A Remington 510 Targetmaster has been the "trainer" in my family since my dad started with it in 1946. It's always been a shooter and still has a nice crisp trigger. My sister and I learned to shoot with it and so did our kids. My youngest nephew has it now, but as I understand it he'll soon be surprised with a M700 in 7-08. Then the 510 goes back in the safe for the next generation.

It would be scary to total the rounds put through all the .22's mentioned here

Mine was a Browning Trombone, made in Belgium by FN. Loved that gun. Dad still has it.

Marlin Glenfield Model 60. I got it for my 13th B-day in 1976 and I still have it. Ain't for sale. Never will be. Might be buried with it.
