Found a couple rifle blanks that were at a garage sale. Apparently there use to be a gun club here and they made rifle stocks some time back. They have been milled out and drilled. But how do I figure what action they have been drilled out for? I can't find any gun smith here local so I'm stuck with this beautiful birds eye maple rifle stock that deserves to be finished. I'm hoping someone here can give me insight on where to start.
My GUESS, based on 50 years of "messing about with" rifles, is that the MOST likely action is a Model 98, 93 or 96 Mauser. (Such surplus rifles were once CHEAP. = In 1965 I "had my choice of" over 50 K-98 Mauser rifles from Pre-WWII for 10 bucks each in "near new" condition. - I hate to think now how many GREAT Mauser rifles that I cut-up for sporters, way back then.)
The firearm that I was directly involved in RUINING was a M1911 COLT military in MINT condition from 1917. - My customer insisted that I send it out to be the beautiful blue stripped & heavily coated with automotive BUMPER CHROME.= It makes me ILL to think about ruining the pistol.

That roll-over is not the sort of things most folks go for these days and there is almost no chance of there being enough wood to make it go away cleanly.
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

You are correct Art. Way too olden days to peak my interest.
I don't see the relieving for the bolt catch release of a Mauser. Not saying it's not there, I just don't see it. Therefore I'd guess that it's for a SA Model 70.
Don't be the darkness.

I would love to do 243 or 257 Robert's or 308. But are these even feasible if so what should I look for?
Yes, feasible.
Comparing your photos with my Model 70 short action made in Bridgeport not long before Winchester shut down the factory there, the inletting looks like it should fit. 7" spacing, the semicircle for the third bottom metal screw behind the magazine, and inletting in the trigger area (curved on right, flat on left) are all the same. I don't know whether they came from the factory in your preferred chamberings (mine started as a 308 Win) but should be compatible once rebarrelled by a competent gunsmith. You might also look at the Montana Rifle Co Model 1999 short action.
