Have you tried fence line weaning? The idea is rather than removing the calves from the mother's sight you separate them with a fence (obviously it had better be sturdy). This is supposed to be less stressful on the calves and they take off eating better and have less health problems.

I tried the nose paddles this year for weaning calves.....put them in on Sunday afternoon and removed them on Saturday.....worked better than I had ever dreamed. use Quiet Wean nose paddles. My neighbor poo-pooed it and had that know-it-all grin on his face. After I put the paddles in, I called him on each of the next three days and asked him if he could hear anything. Said he couldn't hear a thing.
I did not lose any paddles and it went very smooth.
