This top photo shows me and a dandy buck taken within the Black Hills before antler restrictions were enacted. I located the buck with my binoculars and made a long stalk in rough country to get into 30-30 range. Distance was about 125 yards. At the shot, the buck bounded away but toppled over after a few jumps. We prefer hunting in western South Dakota over other states because of the easy access to vast public lands and the excellent game populations there. My buddies always whine about me taking the Winchester on my western hunts. "You should buy a 270", they say. But this angle-eject carbine has never let me down and stalking within good shooting distance is half the fun. I feel that it is a myth that only long shots are possible for western hunts. 30-30 is a keeper! Sherwood

Long shots only out west for mule deer? Say it ain't so. No rifle in this picture, but this buck was taken at about 50 yards with a Win 94 AE in .307 Win.

If you didn’t kill him with a behind your back shot at 500 yards, it doesn’t count!
Congrats on the successful stalk.

I killed my buck with an iron sighted 303 Lee about 1 month ago. Shot was close. Maybe 45 yards or so. Flat shooting rifles with scopes make things easier, but for those that are into hunting more then just killing the iron sighted guns are more fun.
I use the flat shooters and the scopes myself, and I use them a lot, but I enjoy the hunting more when I shoot close. Up close the iron sight work as well as anything else.
So far this year I have killed all my game shooting with irons, and my longest shot was at 177 yards from prone with a 6.5 Mannlicher at my 1st antelope buck of the year.
Congrats Sherwood (and you too Inman)

Great picture of a successful hunt! We had our old .30-30 afield today too. Deer didn’t cooperate though.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you'll never make a TV hunting show killing a deer at 125 yds with that peashooter. Get you a Creedmoor and take 1250 yd shots and you'll make the big time.
But, the way you did it, IMO, is the right way to do it. Congrats

I have no quarrel with those hunters who shoot at 200 yards and beyond. But for me I enjoy planning and stalking to get within 30-30 range.

Congrats on some fine hunting with a .30-30. I've been wanting to get my .30-30 from my mom's and take it moose hunting.
