Holiday clusterfugg..

UPS is preparing for what could be the second-biggest employee strike to hit the delivery company since 1997.

The Georgia-based parcel service said it's clearing all of its freight shipments this week to ensure its network is completely empty by Friday, days before a massive strike could potentially start.

Up to 11,000 drivers, who are represented by the Teamsters union, may be on strike as early as Monday morning, as contract negotiations remain at a standstill.

All week, Teamster members across the country have been voting on UPS’s “last, best, and final offer” contract with final votes expected to be tallied on Sunday. If a majority of members do not approve the contract, UPS Freight drivers will not go to work on Monday.

The two parties have been going back and forth on wage increases, better pay for drivers who perform dock work, benefits and restrictions on subcontractors

In a statement to FOX Business, a UPS spokesperson said that, "We are disappointed that the Freight Teamsters union leaders have chosen to announce the potential for a strike, should their members vote 'no' on the offer. The company has worked with UPS Freight customers to inform them of the potential for service disruption and the need to arrange alternative carriers."

What’s more, while UPS has responded to certain demands from union members like keeping the threshold for workers to qualify for a year of pension credit at 1,500 hours instead of increasing it to 1,800, it has not conceded on all their demands.

If the strike happens, it will be the first UPS strike since 185,000 employees held a 16-day walkout in 1997.

A representative for Teamsters did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment.

Maybe they’ll come to an agreement. I’m no union expert but the timing is right..

I got caught in the 1997 one with a big promotion we did. Screwed the company royally. To this day, I give FedEx the freight any time I can.

This is a good reminder to continue to do so. The union can bite me.

Haven't used UPS in years. They make a pretty good practice of raping Alaskan's for shipping. I've been using USPS flat rate for everything I can . Even their non flat rate charges are less than UPS to and from Alaska.

Should prove interesting. Cannot recall where, but last week thought I read that Amazon was considering hiring it's own private contract delivery drivers for the holiday season to take the spike off of UPS (and to reduce cost, no doubt...)

Hmmm, bought some ammo on sale this week, UPS tracking says delivery by end of day Thursday 11/15/18.

Gonna have to keep an eye on that...

The company I worked for before retiring dropped UPS for FedEx right before start of UPS's '97 strike entirely because of the impending strike. The type of business we did daily delivery and pick up of our shipping, much of it next day delivery of critical emergency parts, was the heart beat of the company.

This is UPS's LTL, not small package drivers.

Unlikely to affect you as that volume will simply shift to other LTL providers like YRC, or Estes.

Vendors often insist on shipping UPS to rural Alaska.

UPS often gets the package to ANC or FAI and then turns over to USPS.

Shoulda stared with USPS to start with....and cheaper.

Correct. In fact, the predecessor, Overnite Transportation, was non-union. I've heard that UPS encouraged the Teamsters to come in so they would have everyone in one union.

I know a driver for UPS freight. He worked for Overnite for several years before it was bought by UPS. After the take over UPS cut the former Overnite employees pay and benefits. UPS Freight pretty much pushed them into going union. Then again, The Teamsters are a larger shareholder in the company.
