I always take my M1 Garand hunting with me on Veteran's Day and have had good success with it. Today's holiday was no exception. Was unable to get out this morning, but had time for a quick hunt this afternoon before the monsoons started. I took this big ol' nanny goat with the Garand that is very close (mfg date within one month) to the serial number my dad carried in the Battle of The Bulge back in the day. He served with the 75th Infantry Division and could remember his serial number until Alzheimer's began winning the battle. He passed away in 2006 and I always remember his contributions on this special day. Love you ol man! RIP HDH, 75th Inf Div.

My father was born on a homestead in eastern Montana in 1910. He never got past the 8th grade in a one room school on Fishel Creek outside Musselshell, Montana. He was drafted at 31 years old and spent the war in the Philippine islands. He came back to Montana to a job that was no longer there and no “ticker tape” parade. He found a job and went to work.
I asked him if he even knew there was a place called the Philippines, let alone where it was before he landed there in 1942. He told me he hadn’t. He never complained about it although it cost him a few years and his natural teeth. I always admired his character and still believe he and thousands like him are American heroes...

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Very neat. The idea of using that rifle to remember your dads service is brilliant.

Very nice. We have an early 50’s H&R Garand. My Son wanted to shoot and sight it in the other day, so we spent a little time with it.
The groupings were just fine, some slight adjustments for 50 yards. I’d easily take it deer hunting, though a tad heavier than I prefer. They must of had manly men back then, it’s a lot of rifle.

Put it on a digital scale and do the same with a handful of bolt action centerfires. You might be surprised.

Thanks for sharing godog. I had an uncle who was at Normandy on D-Day, I never heard him speak of it, and actually didn't even know he'd been there until he was in his eighties. Great way to honor the memory of your dad.

To All,
My late uncle bought a 11/43 SA Garand for 75.00 about 1960 & hunted with it successfully as long as he lived. - Now my 1st cousin hunts with it. = It has accounted for a LOT of venison in the last nearly 60 years.
The old warhorse is HARD to beat with JSP up to 165 grain JSP ammo for hunting out to 300M. (Btw, the CHEAP "white box" Winchester 150 grain ammo that Wal-Mart sells works fine in Garand rifles. - It's a near "clone" of M2 Ball)
yours, tex

How cool. My dad made all five years of WWII. I have his bayonet from an early Springfield. He departed us in 1995.
