A few months back I was in Boise and went into Pie Hole for lunch. A little hole in the wall pizza joint across the street from BSU. About a far from a country cafe as you can get - well inside the kids making the pizzas had old Jerry Reed cranked up and were singing right along. Loved it. East bound and down.......

My oldest is 14. He heard this one when we were driving and the kid has worn out the "knock 'em in da head with da stump" line...... It's become his answer to everything.
Jerry Reed went to the same high school in Atlanta that my girlfriend did, O'Keefe.
I thought he was just a regular country musician and some time actor. But they had some stories on him recently on Sirius, he was known as an outstanding guitar player. Elvis was recording a song and couldn't get his musicians to play the guitar the way he wanted, he called up Jerry Reed and had him come to Memphis to do the guitar work.
I liked him in Smokey and the Bandit, kind of a dumb ass movie but I like it. Especially now since I am an 18 wheeler driver.
That film was made in the late seventies, the hey day of truck driving. Back then we were called "Knights of the Road" and they made big Hollywood movies about us. Burt Reynolds was a big star. Also Kris Kristofferson and Ali McGraw made a film about truck driving, "Convoy," in that same year. The glory days of the CB radio.
Hollywood is not making any movies about us any more if we do appear in a film we are portrayed as redneck goofballs.
Loved him in "The Survivors" "Don't be jivin' with the ass...and don't give me no [bleep]! ....Honkey Mofo."

JCM,
your kid has good taste but I always preferred this line:
"Alligator bait in the Louisiana bayou"

The desert is a true treasure for him who seeks refuge from men and the evil of men. In it is contentment In it is death and all you seek (Quoted from "The Bleeding of the Stone" Ibrahim Al-Koni)
Always loved "Amos Moses". Lo and behold if one of my sons didn't marry a girl from... Thibodeaux, LA. I should have looked up old Doc Mills South and his pretty wife Hannah while I was there for the wedding!
The biggest problem our country has is not systemic racism, it's systemic stupidity.

Back the Fu'ckin truck up here a minute. A dumb ass movie?
For a kid growing up in the late 70's and early 80's, Smoky and the Bandit was the coolest thing ever. I could tell you what brand of semi truck was coming at you on the freeway from 1/4 mile away.......and spot a TransAm from further than that. A little hard to believe now, but being a trucker back then was what every kid wanted to do.
