This rifle started as a Stock Rem 700 AWR that turned out to be too much rifle for my buddy and I ended up buying it. I really only have one real idea/purpose for this rifle and that is to be a LR Elk buster...I hunt some of the most rugged wilderness area in Idaho with huge steep canyons. You want Elk to go down for the count and not run after being hit. Also, you can have shot opportunities that will hit 600-1000 yards pretty quick. What better rifle for that than a LR 300 RUM Slinging Big Heavy Sleak LR bullets. (220 scenars is what we will start with)

Anyways, the bolt came back today from Kampfields so I snapped a few pics of it..
Rem 700 AWR 300 Rum 5r barrel
McMillan Hunter Edge - GAP Camo painted - bedded
Timney 510 - set to 2.5 pounds
Matching contour gentry muzzle brake
Bolt has been lightened, knurled campfire knob, and ti flutting
Has been opened for Wyatts box at 3.780" approx.
As it shows (with half of talley rings attached) it weighs 6 #15 oz....

Looking at 3 optic choices
1. NXS 3.5-15X50
2. ATACR 4-16X42 F1
3. KAHLES 3-18X50

Any of those scopes will put it at around 9 pounds. If I go with the NXS, I may be able to get away with 30 mm Talleys, the other two will need heavier PIC style 34mm rings...

The danged 300 RUM is a beast. Sounds like you’re putting together a beast of an elk rifle!

Can’t wait to see the pictures.

Is the Hunters EDGE going to hold up to the RUM, I’d always been led to believe from guys like Echols, Simillion and McM themselves said the EDGE sorta stopped at the 300 Win sorta intensity cartridges. I’ll be watching your build. Sounds pretty wicked.

Not sure why my pics aren't coming through - wonder if something changed with IMGUR?

The rifle is securely glass bedded in the stock and will have a muzzle brake so I think it will hold up fine. Talked to a lot of people on this site and the overall concensus was that if bedded correctly and with a brake, the stock will be fine.

Makes sense to me. I’d like to try an EDGE filled Legend on a 300 Wby I’m building.

The 300 RUM is a monster. That should be a wicked platform for elk. Those 220 Scenars sound like beasts as well.

Ive been running edge fill stocks on 300 win mags and 300 rums for many years. My 300 rum has actually been through several barrels and my win mag is on #2.

Sweet, that's good to know you all have had great luck with them. Thank you.

How many rounds did you get out of each?

The .300 RUM is a brute of a cartridge and terrific with the heavier bullets.
Mine really liked 94 grains of Retumbo under the 200 grain Nosler Accubond bullet. The Model 70 I had clocked 3120fps with this load using the Federal 215 primer.

A remarkable result with this rifle was that it also shot 3 different bullets into the same group using the 130gn Barnes TTSX bullet over 96gn of H 4831SC for 3462fps, 94gn of H 1000 using the 200gn Accubond at 3084fps and the 200gn Partition also over 94gn of H 1000 for 3120fps.
Hope this is useful.

I would start and stop with the 215 Berger hybrid. Less bearing surface, less weight, and better BC.

Just concluded a very similar 300 Rum project this summer/fall. I too built not one but two clean vintage 700 Rums. Some gun smith accurizing, quality stock, trigger , brake and tons of shooting. Goal also was 220s or 210s but as many others 200 grain Accubonds just seem to fly too good not to use them. One was rigged with 34mm ATACR and one with NXS compact. I backpack in and the latter lighter NXS with simple Light Talleys but still 10lb+ rifle won out. Slammed my bull striding out just shy of summit @ 360 yds hitting dirt and tumbling half way down ridge my way. Have fun, will be sweet!
