Have an opportunity to pursue one at the LGS and was wondering what the consensus is.
I believe this one is a Mod. 14, fixed sights, 357 mag. w/ a 4" barrel. How durable are they,
how well do they usually shoot, etc. Anything to watch out for?

They are tanks, almost indestructible. I have one in 41 mag.....great gun. Yours is mor of a ccw gun, but if it fits you and like it,,,go for it.

Good guns at minimum, great guns if cared for - some have been rode hard.

Fixed sight frames tend to get poo-pooed away, but they are as good as the adjustable.

Barrel tool - if you are ever going to change barrels, you need one, and finding one separate from the pistol can be expensive.

Same with the feeler gauges for the forcing cone clearance, but that can be replaced with a set from the hardware store.

Grips - they use a one piece grip with a bolt, much like a Contender, finding Dan Wesson original grips are expensive in my experience, and the market is limited.

If it's a good price, you're not going to disappointed, they are good quality revolvers, IMHO.

Change out the DW grips for a set of (can't remember the brand they use now) if the original DW's do not fit your hand well.
I am a big believer of adjustable sights on any gun.
By the way I have a 14, 4" but do not shoot it much

the piece in question is around 85-90% condition, no major marks or disfiguring
gouges but obviously lightly used.

$350-400 is typically what I see for a bottom-end Model 14 if they know what they have, and want to move it.

Local shops were asking $500 up, and they are still sitting last I looked - unless they had an uncommon barrel configuration - silhouette style, vent-rib, etc.

Keep in mind that the barrels alone will bring $200-400 each for the "right" barrel.

Large frames have been running $750-800 for the asking price.

Oddly, I just picked up one of these with a 2.5" barrel in nickel plate. Paid $400

I was cruising this board to see if there was any collector interest in the model 14. The nickel is starting to peel on the cylinder and I am faced with re-nickeling the cylinder or hard chroming the whole gun. $250 vs $500. If there is collector value, I want to keep it nickel.

I have one in 44 mag that I bought new about 36 years ago. It had the 6" ported barrel and the unported barrel. The basic gun has never had a problem at all. Shooting with the ported barrel has had some problems because the barrel ports vent some copper that builds up between the barrel and shroud and makes it hard to get apart. If you shot too much they may be welded together. I can't tell any dfference in recoil so I just retired the ported barrel.
