Anyone have any suggestions? There are a dozen of them on Amazon from $100 plus to $17.00, I have a 12 volt deep cycle battery that I want to maintain, don't want to ruin it with a trickle charger and people tell me I want a smart charger? No idea what to spend on the thing.

A Shumacher trickle charger/maintainer won't ruin your battery. It will only charge if the battery needs charging. I've had 2 of them for years, I use them on my boat and my UTV. Never had a problem with overcharging a battery. I think my Schumachers were around $75 or so, if I remember right.

A mechanic buddy kept a battery on a tricle charger at his shop. He kept an old car radio hooked up to it, turned on all the time. Trickle out..trickle in. Does that make sense? I never tried it.

You see this brand in lots of newer bass boats for maintaining the battery. You can choose the voltage that best fits your needs. You may have to copy and paste into your search. https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-G7200-UltraSafe-Battery-Charger/dp/B004LWTHP2

I use the "Junior" models on both motorcycles.. Two standard units on the camper batteries, the dump trailer and two more for Adam's boat batteries.. These are very good deals when bought in packs of 2,3 or 4..: https://www.amazon.com/Deltran-021-...mp;sr=8-6&keywords=battery+tender+jr

I kept a boat battery about 10 years with a Battery Tender Jr. They are great little gadgets.

I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.

Trickle charger, tender, maintainer - what's the difference? You charge a battery with a constant voltage and it will self-limit the current so water that disassociates has a chance to recombine so you don't lose water. The better ones compensate for ambient temperature I suppose. The magic voltage changes with battery age too but by the time it becomes significant your battery is pretty much worn out anyway. No magic involved execept in salesmanship.
Automatic chargers charge current limited until the battery is "full" (faster) and then switch to voltage limited at that magic float voltage.

Northern Tool had their $49.99 battery maintainers (not chargers) for sale online a couple of weeks ago for $24.99. I told my SIL about it and he went to the local store to pick up a few. He called me and told me they on sale in the store for $18.99. I think today 11/21 is the last day of the local sale. Most people aren't aware that the Northern Tool stores are competing with the Northern Tool website to stay in business. Those Northern Tool ads you get in the mail with the 20% to 33% off coupons and the sales prices are not valid on the website. The coupon discounts can be used on the sale prices also.

I went to NAPA for the one on my tractor. It was about $15.

I had a minnkota 3 bank charger hooked up to my (3) Trojan SCS200’s in my boat. Typically I would plug it in for a day after a day of fishing. Worked perfectly for a couple years. One winter I pulled the batteries out and hooked the charger up in my garage and left it plugged in for a couple months as it’s supposed to be safe to maintain the batteries. Well it boiled most of the fluid out and ruined all of my high dollar batteries. My mode going forward is to plug it in once in a while to make sure they are full and then unplug. I don’t leave chargers hooked up to trickle anymore.

I have Shumacher and Battery Tender brands both, and they both do what they're supposed to do.
